“Find Your Joy,” is an invitation for people of all backgrounds to explore and discover what sparks joy in them at the library. The theme amplifies a message that is ever-present in Threets’ viral videos about the innumerable ways people can find joy in the library and in his debut picture book, "I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy."

During National Library Week, April 19-25, 2026, discover your library joy.

• Stop by your library and bring someone with you.
• Help a friend sign up for a library card. It’s one small step that opens up endless possibilities.
• Explore something new: a book, a program, a class, or a conversation. From storytimes to makerspaces, author talks to job support, libraries are places where curiosity and connection come to life.

Tuesday, April 21, 2026 is National Library Workers Day (NLWD), a time to recognize library professionals for their expertise and leadership skills in transforming lives and communities through education and lifelong learning. The day also reminds the public that library workers serve as community compasses that lead users to endless opportunities for engagement, enrichment, and development.

From helping patrons find their next great read to organizing programs, answering questions, and creating welcoming spaces for all, our library workers do it all—and they do it with passion and care.

Please join us in thanking our amazing library workers for everything they do to support our community every single day. We appreciate you more than words can say!

The freedom to read is still being challenged: From January 2025 through March 2026, more than 100 pro-censorship bills were introduced in state legislatures. At least 40 bills would penalize libraries and library workers with lawsuits, fines, or even jail time for protecting people’s the right to read.

Since 2021, the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom has tracked an astonishing increase in censorship attempts in libraries and schools around the country, impacting thousands of titles annually. The data shows that the majority of book censorship attempts are now originating from organized movements. In 2024, pressure groups and government entities that include elected officials, board members, and administrators initiated 72% of demands to censor books in school and public libraries. Data for 2025 will be released on Right to Read Day.

But while the challenges we face are real, so is the growing network of individuals and organizations who continue to win victories, share strategies, and build momentum to protect the right to read everywhere.

Because of your hard work we’ve seen meaningful progress in courts, in legislatures, and in local communities. Even when things are tough, we keep showing up to fight for the freedom to read and strengthening the movement together.

Right to Read Day is a time to celebrate our wins and take action against book bans!

Celebrate National Library Week 2026

Libraries are more than just books—they’re places to connect, learn, and grow. This National Library Week, we’re celebrating finding your joy at the library!

"I love libraries enthusiastically every week! To serve as Honorary Chair for National Library Week takes that enthusiasm to a whole new level. Celebrating libraries, thanking library workers, visiting libraries is how I find my joy. There are so many library kids and library grown-ups who have yet to fully embrace their library joy, and I am so excited for them! When they enter the world of libraries and stories, I am confident they will find not only their library joy but their courage to believe in their own story and maybe even share it with others." —Mychal Threets

We’d also like to extend a special thank you to Governor Tate Reeves for officially recognizing National Library Week across Mississippi with his proclamation. Your support helps highlight the vital role libraries play in our communities!

Stop by your local library to explore new reads, discover programs, and take a moment to meet the friendly faces behind the desk. Whether you’re a lifelong reader or just getting started, there’s something here for everyone.

Join us all week long as we celebrate the power of libraries to bring communities together.
