The Jackson Regional Driver's License Office will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. this Saturday, August 1st. Appointments are not required, and walk-ins are welcome. It was an honor to participate in the memorial and road dedication for the late James Courtney Holbrook, a former magistrate of Breathitt County who was killed trying to protect his community.

The Life, Service and Tragic Death of JC Holbrook

A section of Kentucky Route 540 in Breathitt County will be named in memory of former Magistrate James Courtney Holbrook, who tragically died while serving his community on July 23, 1953. Born on October 22, 1907, in the Frozen area of Breathitt County, Holbrook had been an elected Magistrate for over three and a half years and had previously worked as a sheriff’s deputy since January 1, 1950.

On the night of his death, he was engaged in the pursuit of an escaped convict, Navar James Arthur Pittman. Holbrook located Pittman in a stolen 1947 Chevrolet two-door sedan at the Camp Christy section of Strong Fork. As he approached the vehicle, a violent confrontation ensued, resulting in Holbrook being shot once in the chest with a .22 caliber pistol. Despite his grave injuries, he managed to return fire, killing Pittman before succumbing to his wounds shortly thereafter at the age of 47, leaving behind a wife and seven children.

In honor of Holbrook's dedication and ultimate sacrifice, we proposed the designation of a portion of the highway as the "J.C. Holbrook Memorial Highway." This initiative was successfully sponsored by Representative Chris Fugate and subsequently passed by the Kentucky General Assembly. This tribute not only acknowledges his commitment to local governance but also serves as a lasting testament to his sacrifice and impact on our community.

I would like to express my gratitude to my friend Anthony Holbrook and State Representative Chris Fugate for their efforts in renaming a section of Highway 540 in honor of James Courtney Holbrook.
