Are you worried because it seems like all your feeder birds have vanished? Was there a catastrophic die off? Have the birds developed a personal grudge and are boycotting your backyard? Don’t worry over-thinkers, there’s a natural explanation!
Fall is a time of natural food abundance every year, but this year bird feeders are especially quiet. During years of hot summers and drought, oak trees, and some other species will produce very large quantities of acorns and food. This cycle happens every few years and it ensures that there will be more food produced than the wildlife can eat, ensuring some of the seeds survive to germinate in the Spring. These “Mast” years means that the birds, and other wildlife, are enjoying the natural over abundance of food in the wild and don’t bother coming to your feeders. You didn’t do anything wrong, you haven’t offended your feathered brethren, and they’re not all dead in a ditch somewhere, they’re just enjoying the free buffet while the gettin’s good. In the money you’re saving on bird seed and suet, maybe you can upgrade your feeders, or get a new bird bath, treat yo’ self!

What an amazing weekend celebrating Silver Bluff Sanctuary and conservation progress across South Carolina!

More than 120 Audubon members, partners, and supporters gathered to celebrate Silver Bluff’s 50th anniversary and the sanctuary’s legacy of sustainable land management and ecological restoration.

We also recognized Governor Henry McMaster with Audubon’s Conservation Champion Award, for his leadership in advancing land protection statewide.

A special thank you to Marshall Johnson, Chief Conservation Officer at National Audubon, S.C. Senator Tom Young, and S.C. Representative Bill Hixon for joining us for this milestone celebration!

Here’s to the next 50 years of protecting South Carolina’s natural treasures.

Can we get some love for Silver Bluff's champions? The last 50 years of conservation, education, and restoration (plus all those Wood Storks) wouldn't be possible without their dedicated time, care, and effort!
