Here's our from tonight's School Board meeting! 🧑‍🚒

Tonight, we recognize Chief Mason Maddox with the Locust Creek Volunteer Fire Department. A PROUD 2015 graduate of LCHS, Mason has been making a positive impact on our community through his department's Kids Cadet Academy!

Now in its third year, the program welcomed 32 young fire cadets for a week of learning about firefighting, leadership, and citizenship. Mason also brought together multiple local fire and EMS agencies to make the experience even more impactful.

We're always proud to see our graduates giving back and investing in the next generation. That's Lion Pride. 🦁💚💛

Thirty-two young cadets walked away from the Company 5 Locust Creek Volunteer Fire Department’s (LCVFD) annual Kids Cadet Academy last week with more than graduation badges—they left with life-saving knowledge and a firsthand look at the work of local first responders.

The week-long effort, held June 22-26, marked the department’s third year hosting the program after several evenings of hands-on instruction in fire suppression, emergency preparedness, search-and-rescue tactics, tool familiarity, truck operations, home safety, air medical transport and more. Two classes were held each evening from 5-7 p.m. for children ages 4-12, concluding with a graduation ceremony.

One of the week’s biggest highlights came on day four, when LifeEvac introduced cadets to air medical transport operations. Participants toured the helicopter, learned about its role in emergency response and watched the aircraft perform a landing, takeoff and flyover.

“I’m a little biased, but the helicopter coming out is definitely a crowd pleaser,” LCVFD Fire Chief Mason Maddox III said. “It takes a lot of coordination with the company to set everything up, but it’s always well worth it.”

Beyond the excitement of the helicopter demonstration, Maddox said the academy’s primary goal was ensuring participants left with knowledge that could one day save lives.

“A lot of what we preach is fire safety at home and prevention knowledge,” Maddox said. “It’s really important in the event of an emergency that they know exactly what to do. Now they know to have a meeting place and memorize their address when they dial 911.”

We have to give a shout out to M&C Wood Designs, the night before graduation we realized that we didn’t order plastic badges this year for graduation which is a very important part of the ceremony, Michelle took the challenge and had these better wooden badges done by 12 the next day, and on top of that she donated them to us! And shout out to Roseanna Kay Maddox Newton for reaching out to her, picking them up, and assembling the pins for the back. I think we have found where we will be having them made in the future, thank you Michelle and everyone please go check out her business!

The 2026 Kid’s Cadet Academy wrapped up tonight, we are so proud as an organization to say we graduated 32 Cadets this evening. Thank you for all the hard work from our Cadets, parents, instructors, neighboring departments, and everyone who made this week possible. We look foward to Academy 2027!
