Civil War Survivor.... One of Jackson's oldest dwellings, this Greek Revival-style cottage was built about 1853 on a four-acre urban farmstead near the center of the capital city. The house is one of few extant structures that survived the burning of Jackson, Mississippi, in the Civil War. Home of Early Jackson Mayor.... Also known as the Boyd House, The Oaks was the home of James Hervey Boyd, his

wife Eliza, their six children and numerous grandchildren. Boyd served Jackson four times as mayor and at least six terms as alderman. Three generations of Boyds lived in the house for more than a hundred years. Original and Period Furnishings.... Inside the cottage, period furnishings include original Boyd furniture and depict the life of this middle-class family in mid-19th century Jackson, especially during the years 1853-1863. Victorian Gardens.... Step through the gate to enter a late Victorian garden. Heirloom roses, camellias and native perennials fill the planting beds. Follow the gravel footpath to the rear of the property and walk back in time, past a kitchen herb garden and the site of the barn, to the work area behind the house, the cistern, the dairy house and the site of the original detached kitchen. Open Tuesdays and Fridays form 10-3 and by appointment ([email protected], 601-353-9339.
