Mississippi House Democrats Lead United Opposition to School Voucher Bill; Republican Defections Signal Widespread Concerns Over Education Funding
JACKSON, MS – The Mississippi Democratic Party today emphasized the unprecedented unity and bipartisan opposition to House Bill 2, legislation that would divert public funds to private school vouchers, after the measure passed the House by a razor-thin margin of just three votes.
"House Democrats were in perfect lockstep in our efforts to defeat HB 2, the so-called school choice bill," said Cheik Taylor, Chairman of the Mississippi Democratic Party. "While the bill ultimately passed by a narrow margin of just three votes, it is important to acknowledge and thank our Republican colleagues who also stood against it."
The near-defeat of HB 2 represents one of the most significant shows of resistance to education privatization in recent Mississippi legislative history, with every Democratic House member voting against the measure and multiple Republicans breaking ranks to oppose their own party's leadership.
"Let us not forget that access to a strong, well-funded public education is a constitutional right, one Democrats across this country continue to defend," Chairman Taylor continued. "In Mississippi, that fight is especially critical, and our commitment to protecting public schools has never been more necessary."
The legislation faced substantial opposition from educators, parents, rural communities, and legislators concerned about:
- Draining critical resources from already underfunded public schools
- Lack of accountability for private institutions receiving taxpayer dollars
- Disproportionate impact on rural communities where public schools serve as community anchors
- Constitutional questions regarding the use of public funds for private education
Mississippi ranks near the bottom nationally in education funding, and opponents argue that diverting resources to private school vouchers will further strain public schools that serve the vast majority of the state's children.
"This three-vote margin shows that Mississippians across party lines recognize the danger of dismantling our public education system," said Chairman Taylor. "We will continue working with all legislators who share our commitment to strengthening—not weakening—public schools."
The Mississippi Democratic Party pledges to continue fighting for adequate education funding, teacher pay raises, and resources that benefit all Mississippi students, regardless of zip code or family income.
