WE LOVE A GOOD REFRAME, so I’m reframing the way I talk about my “work.”

For the longest time, whenever I talked about everything I had going on, I was reminded in one way or another…

“But you don’t get paid for that.”

And somewhere along the way, I let that change the way I talked about my own time.

Instead of saying I was working I was “busy doing STUFF” or I’d find myself over-explaining exactly what I was doing because calling it “work” didn’t feel justified without a paycheck attached to it.

But 👏🏼we’re 👏🏼fixing 👏🏼that 👏🏼

Because with everything I have going on, I think it’s safe to say…I work!

I volunteer. I lead. I plan. I facilitate. I advocate. I attend meetings. I build partnerships. I answer emails. I create. I prepare. I travel. I show up!

Right now, I’m also intentionally investing in myself as a lifelong learner. I’m taking courses, learning new skills, and continuing my own development. I may not be traditionally “enrolled in school,” but I’m allowed to protect my time for learning too.

None of those things suddenly become less valuable because there isn’t a paycheck or transcript attached to them.

So maybe someone else needs this reminder too:

You are allowed to have professional commitments that don’t come with a paycheck!

If you’re volunteering, taking courses, building something, serving your community, developing a skill, or investing in yourself, you don’t have to minimize that time because it doesn’t fit neatly into a traditional definition of “work” or “school.”

Your time still deserves boundaries.
Your commitments still deserve respect.
And YOU are allowed to treat them that way.

So with that being said…

If you notice my phone spending a little more time on Do Not Disturb, sorry not sorry!

Ya girl is working 🤍

Since my grandfather’s recent passing, I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about a chapter of his life I wish I had asked more about while he was here, his time in the Army and his 17 months serving in Vietnam.

I’ve learned more about his tour, his service, and the soldier he was. To say I am proud of him and what he accomplished during his time in uniform would be an understatement.

But seeing his name here…that hit differently.

His time in Vietnam was only one chapter of a much bigger life. He came home. He built a family. He became my Poppy. And decades later, his name now stands among those recognized for their service to our country.

There is something incredibly powerful about seeing the name of someone you love connected to a piece of their life that required so much of them.

Thank you, USAA , for giving my family the opportunity to see his name honored and his service recognized! This is something I will never forget!

In true Shelby fashion, I was chatting with our waitress at dinner tonight. Somewhere in the conversation she introduced me to a phrase I don’t think I’ve ever been personally called before:

“Champagne taste.”

I immediately started laughing because…honestly? She might be onto something.

Growing up, my dad’s standard disclaimer before we ordered was “Shelby, please don’t pick the most expensive thing on the menu.”

In my defense, I always thought it was just the foodie in me. I love trying new restaurants, unique dishes, and the things I’ve never had before. Apparently, those just happen to be the menu items that cost the most 😅

So today I learned there’s actually a phrase for that...

So HI, I’m Shelby, and I apparently have champagne taste on a beer budget 🤍

Please tell me I’m not the only one!

Friendly reminder to check if you or your loved ones are represented on The National Military Monument™ presented by USAA!

I recently submitted updates for members of my own family, and their names are officially there! I can’t wait to stop by on our travels back down south and see them recognized in person.

If you have a service member or veteran in your family, take a few minutes to search their name, I’ll drop the link in the comments. If they aren’t there yet, look into adding them!

Our service members’ stories deserve to be remembered, honored, and passed down for generations. I’ll be bringing my kids along to see a piece of their own family’s military history represented, and that makes this one even more special 🇺🇸

LOVE A GOOD PIVOT 🫡

you can waste your life wishing it went differently, or you can get really fu***ng good at moving forward no matter your situation.

the route was never the mission.

the plan can change without the goal changing.

so pivot. adapt. take the long way if you have to.

just don’t fu***ng stop.

don’t you ever give up on yourself.

i want to see you win. and you will win.
