🌟 ISB Success Story

After graduating from the Illinois School for the Blind (ISB), Mark Peters continued his education, earning an associate's degree in Administrative Services and a certification in Business Operations from Lone Star College.

Today, Mark serves as the Assistive Technology Manager for the Blind Professionals Network, where he oversees training specialists who help individuals learn to use assistive technology to achieve greater independence at home, in school, and in the workplace.

Mark also continues to support the Illinois School for the Blind as president of the school's Advisory Council, a role he has held since 2018. The council provides recommendations to IDHS on best practices for the education of children who are blind or have low vision throughout Illinois.

Reflecting on his experience, Mark credits the Illinois School for the Blind's diverse and supportive community with helping create an environment where every student had the opportunity to learn, grow, and belong.

Mark's story demonstrates how educational opportunities, strong support systems, and lifelong connections can help students achieve their goals and give back to future generations.

🌟 IDHS School Spotlight: Illinois School for the Blind (ISB)

Located in Jacksonville, the Illinois School for the Blind, formerly the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, provides educational opportunities for students who are blind or have low vision while serving as a statewide resource for families and school districts across Illinois.

ISB serves students ages 5–22 and offers residential programming that helps students build independence while learning and living alongside their peers. The Birth to Three Program also provides early intervention, transition support, and resources for families of young children with visual impairments.

Students have opportunities to:

⠿ Develop Braille literacy
💻 Learn assistive technology
🌎 Build real-world independent living skills
🏅 Participate in adaptive sports

ISB also offers programs and events, including Opening Doors, where students strengthen skills, connect with peers, and participate in hands-on learning and recreational activities.
