Surles has served on the bench in Onslow, Sampson, Duplin and Jones Counties since being elected to a vacant seat in November 2016 and sworn into office on January 1, 2017. Prior to his election to the bench in the 4th Judicial District, Michael served the citizens in his District in a private civil and criminal law practice since 2004 after having graduated from Carolina School of Law in Chapel H

ill in 2003. A registered Republican and NRA member, he is active in our community and his local church of 25 years and is a USMC veteran who comes from a family of Veterans who have served in our US Armed Forces. Michael continues to serve the local citizens from the bench with integrity, fairness and common sense. Michael is a Member of: North Carolina State Bar, Fourth Judicial District Bar, Onslow County Bar Association, North Carolina Bar Association and was admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for Eastern District of N.C. Education: North Carolina School of Science & Mathematics, 1983; Coastal Carolina Community College, A.A. 1985; University of North Carolina at Wilmington, B.A. 1995; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, J.D. 2003.

Well, I've received the best Christmas present already, as the 2020 filing period has come to a close, and I will be running unopposed for re-election as a NC District Court Judge in our 4th Judicial District. I thank all of the attorneys in the 4th District who found confidence in my ability to continue to serve from the bench for another term. I still ask the constituents of Onslow, Sampson, Duplin and Jones Counties for your votes in November 2020 as confirmation for myself that I am serving you at the utmost of my ability with fairness, impartiality, integrity and Godly wisdom and common sense.
