Onslow County 4-H

Onslow County 4-H 4-H opens the door for youth to learn leadership skills and explore ways to give back. 4-H revolutionizes how youth connect to practical, hands-on learning experiences while outside of the classroom.

Through 4-H, more than 1900 young people in Onslow County learn new skills and serve their communities each year. 4-H offers clubs, special interest programs, summer camps, school enrichment, mentors program, after-school and child care training workshops. Guided by North Carolina Cooperative Extension educators and adult and teen volunteers, 4-H'ers gain knowledge, skills and experience that help them become responsible citizens and leaders.

Mission: 4-H Pledge: I pledge ... my HEAD to clearer thinking, my HEART to greater loyalty, my HANDS to larger service and my HEALTH to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world. Motto: To make the best BETTER.

Your seeds have germinated… now what? 🤔

Once your seeds have germinated, the next step is to thin your seedlings.

To do this you need to decide which seedling looks the healthiest, this is the one you will keep and plant.
As shown in the photos below, the seedling I chose to keep is the taller of the two.

Once you decide on the seedling you want to keep, gently pull the other seedling out of the pot. This allows the seedling you are keeping to grow tall and healthy without having to compete with the other seedling for water, soil, and sunlight.

Once the first set of true leaves emerge, we recommend watering your seedling with a diluted liquid fertilizer (ex. Miracle Gro) every other time you water until ready for planting.

The seedling is ready for planting when it has 1-3 true leaves and is a couple of inches tall. If your seedlings look “leggy” (have thin stems) that means they need to be moved to a location with more sunlight.

Check back in a couple days for a tutorial on how to plant your seedlings in your garden! In the meantime, don’t forget to tag us and use the hashtag #GrowOnslow when posting about your Start a Garden Kit!

2020 North Carolina Little Miss Agriculture USA, Emory Grace, was excited to be part of the Onslow County 4-H Starter Garden Kit program! They provided her with cucumber and squash seeds to get her started growing! They also gave her lots of great gardening information to go along with her seed kits! Emory is most excited about the cucumbers because she’s hoping to make her very own pickles this year!

Cucumbers belong to the Cucurbitaceae plant family and have two basic types; one for eating and one for pickling! What is your favorite way to eat a cucumber?
