Happy National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day! Good news for OCAS - our cat condos and adoption row are empty! Better news? We started the day with Van Gogh’s adoption ❤️ Van Gogh, who is about 11 years old, came to us back in February. Van Gogh had some skin issues, was in need of some serious TLC and was most noticeably missing an ear. It’s difficult enough for a senior to get noticed, but a senior hound with medical issues AND a missing ear was going to be a challenge. Enter our intrepid special needs foster Sherri. We thought we would send this boy off as an in-between while we found a rescue for him, but that was not meant to be. We are VERY happy to report that Van Gogh became a “foster failure” today. Happy adoption day to this most deserving boy, and a big thank you to another of our amazing foster/adopters Sherri for giving so much love to so many of our special needs friends. Van Gogh will be spending his golden years with the run of a farm, 5 fur-siblings and surrounded by love.

*RABIES VACCINATION CLINIC*

By NC law, all dogs, cats and ferrets are required to have a current rabies vaccination by 4 months of age.

In order to protect our community {both two and four-legged}, Onslow County Animal Services has resumed providing daily rabies vaccination clinic hours every Tuesday - Friday from noon to 4:30.

Clinic visits will be by appointment only. In most cases, same-day appointments are available. The cost is $10 {cash or card} per animal. Due to precautions in place for Covid-19, the clinic will be provided as a drive-up service by OCAS Animal Control. Animals must be at least 4 months of age and leashed or secured in a carrier.

To schedule an appointment, please call 910-937-1164 or 910-455-0182.

We have some amazing news! Our friend Todd, now Buck, just walked out the door and is headed home!

* If you don’t know his story, scroll through our page. He’s been our only available dog for a good part of the past three weeks, so he’s gotten some prime OCAS facebook feature time 😊

This pup has been with us a few weeks and as a special needs boy needed some extra time to find his family. He had a lot of help and received a lot of love along the way.

A very special thank you to our foster Susan who took him home for an extended weekend, spoiled him rotten, took lots of photos and videos and helped us learn how he behaved in a home environment (he’s great!). Thank you to Sunnie from Gibbs Training Pawz for taking the time to work with him on his manners. He did such a good sit for his going home photo!

He has also acquired quite a social media following the past few days. After seeing his story, several members of the community reached out to help. Thank you to Lindsay who stopped by with some goodies and a brand new cozy bed, and to Joseph and an anonymous donor who sponsored his adoption fee. He has tested heartworm positive and will need treatment for a healthy heart. Heartworm treatment is both a commitment and a financial responsibility, so his new family was so grateful to learn that his adoption fee had been sponsored and that he had so many great treats to take home.

This sweet, silly, senior boy won our hearts in his time here and we are so excited to see him get a much deserved second chance. Happy Adoption Day!

Good Morning OCAS friends. Kitten season has kicked into gear and we have seen an increase in little ones coming into the facility. For the littlest babies who are not quite ready to be placed for adoption, we are grateful to have many wonderful fosters who are taking on the care of kittens until they are ready to be made available. With increased intakes, we do have a need for additional kitten supplies. We have added a few items to our wish list for those who wish to donate: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/36Q2K58I9OTMN?ref_=wl_share All donations are very much appreciated!

If you are interested in becoming an OCAS foster, we are always in need of new foster families. Please email our program coordinator at ocasfosteronslowcountync.gov with any questions and to get started.

Todd has done very well with his foster siblings, especially nosy, busy young Evie. Here, Todd takes a bonk on the head with a yawn 😊

04/28/2020

Look at our Todd! He learned two tricks in no time. We’ve learned so much this weekend while Todd took a break from the shelter in a foster home. He does great in a pack, he’s house trained, does well in a crate and he loves to eat. A very special thank you to our foster Susan, who did not hesitate when we asked if she could spring Todd from his kennel for the weekend. Todd is her 80th foster! Thank you as well to Sunnie from Gibbs Training Pawz who spent the afternoon working with Todd.

Todd will be back at the shelter tomorrow for meet and greets. We are hoping tomorrow will be his day. He surely deserves his happily ever after.

Good Morning OCAS friends. Todd is still our only available pup, so we will extend our “All Todd all the time” weekend through Monday 😊

Morning report from Todd’s foster: No accidents! He does “want to party” (or possibly have a snack) at 2am, but will likely settle in with a constant schedule. He is however already in meal schedule mode, as he pulled the covers off his foster for breakfast this morning. 🤣 He is doing great with his foster fur siblings and is doing well in his crate (see photo).

Todd will be back at the shelter tomorrow for meet and greets. Anyone wishing to set up an appointment may call 910-937-1164.

Goodnight OCAS friends. Goodnight Todd ❤️

04/27/2020

Todd has been such a good boy today - helping in the yard, learning a new trick, testing out all the good napping spots and zero accidents in the house. He deserved a special puppy ice cream treat. 🍦 Looks like he is doing well in a crate too!

04/26/2020

Todd is learning commands! Who says you cannot teach an old dog new tricks? Todd’s foster mom tells us that he is catching on quickly and is very eager to learn. We think he looks very snappy in his bow tie.

Todd’s foster mom sent this to us 😆. Todd suffered some type of traumatic injury to his left eye earlier in his life and he is now blind in that eye, but that doesn’t seem to hold him back. We get a lot of comments about it and joked that maybe we should get him a patch for his next photo session. Here he is!

*We think he’s handsome either way 😍

It was another good week at OCAS. We continue to serve the community and are grateful for everyone’s patience as we do our best to provide services while also keeping our staff and guests safe. We are so pleased that so many adoptable friends were able to find home this week. At the end of the day today, all available animals had found a family. Except for our Todd.

Not one to let life get him down, Todd has kept up his happy wagging. But after several weeks at OCAS, we thought he may enjoy a little break from shelter life. We reached out to one of our amazing fosters and she was more than happy to stop by and take Todd on a little adventure, give him some time to be a real pup and provide some feedback we can share with potential adopters. Todd will be back at the shelter next week and available for meet and greets, but for now he’ll be getting some TLC.

As always, Todd was happy as can be to go to a foster home. He hopped right in the car! Todd will get a chance to meet and play with three OCAS alumni, sleep on a nice comfy bed, and run a big fenced yard. Better yet, he’ll be surrounded by lots of love ❤️ Have a great weekend Todd!

Emma - 1 year old, spayed female.

Emma is a very sweet girl. She came to us with her kittens several weeks ago and now that her kittens have all been adopted, she is finally ready for a family of her own. Emma loves finding high spots to hide and sitting in the window here at OCAS.

Happy Adoption Day Kirby!

***ADOPTED***

New available pup alert! Meet Kirby! Kirby is a super sweet 1 1/2 year old Lab mix. Kirby is a bit shy in the kennels, but once she’s outside she really starts to shine. She LOVES being outside in the yard, playing with toys, and getting behind-the-ear scratches. She enjoys running, spinning, wagging and just enjoying life. Kirby is looking for an active family with older children who will include her in their life’s adventures. As we said, she is shy at first, so we are looking for an adopter that will give her the time to feel confident in her new space. Once she feels comfortable, she is a brand new pup. If you enjoy the outdoors, if you are looking for an active young pup to be your lifetime sidekick, and you can give Kirby the time and understanding she needs to feel secure, Kirby may be your girl!

Please call 910-937-1164-to schedule an appointment.

It’s been a little slow today, so we decided to train our friend Todd on front desk duties. He’s doing really well at hospitality and flashing his welcoming smile -he’s a natural, but to be honest, he needs some work on his phone manners. 😄

Todd is such a lovable and happy boy. We hope that he can find a special family soon.
