*Microchip Success Story*

Lady Sassafras arrived at the shelter lost and afraid, but thanks to her microchip she was reunited with her owner!

A microchip is tiny little chip, about the size of a grain of rice, that can be easily implanted by your pet’s veterinarian. When your pet gets lost any vet clinic or shelter will scan the pet. The unique ID number associated with the chip will then be used to easily locate your information and reunite you with your lost pet.

Questions about microchipping? Feel free to send us a massage here so we can help.

Plus, all cats and dogs adopted from Onslow County Animal Services are microchipped prior to adoption! You can check out all of our adoptable animals by visiting onslowcountync.gov/animals and call 910 937-1164 during business hours so we can schedule you an appointment.

A Happy Story
.
Chance was brought to Onslow County Animal Control (OCAS) by Animal Control Officer Greg Isajewicz as the result of an investigation. He had been found running loose in his neighborhood and it was reported that Chase was often out on his own, looking for food. When Chance came to OCAS he was emaciated, parasite infested, and he had not been apparently living in a suitable home environment.
.
Chance's owner signed him over to the custody of OCAS and we got to quick work getting him on the road to recovery.
.
Despite his past, Chance is a silly, playful, and affectionate boy. He loves getting attention from everyone he meets, and he developed quite a bond with Officer Isajewicz in his time at OCAS.
.
We are very happy to announce that a handsome, healthy Chance has been adopted and is getting a second chance at happiness.
.
While the public doesn't often see the results of their work, our Animal Control Officers are out in the community every day making a difference for animals like Chance. We are grateful for their dedication to a difficult and often misunderstood profession.
.
Happy Forever Home Chance!

Happy Adoption Day Ladybug!

She is starting her new life with a brand new name too - Sydney!

Sydney is headed home to a farm and lots of room to run, a houseful of fur siblings a soft, cozy bed and lots of love.

Sydney was one of our heartworm positive pups and we are so grateful to her new mom for opening her heart and home with a special needs dog. We would also like to thank our friends at Paws 4 Purpose who will be working with her adopter to assist with the cost of heartworm treatment. We couldn't be happier that she has a happy, healthy heart in her future.

To the Rescue:

Our Koda is such a good boy!

Koda is a playful, intelligent boy in search of an active family who can keep him active and engaged. Koda does well on a leash (no pulling or jumping), enjoys the company of other dogs, knows sit and takes treats politely and adores a good game of fetch.

If you are interested in Giving Koda a forever home, please call 910-937-1164 to schedule an appointment. We encourage you to bring the whole family to your meet and greet to ensure a good fit.

Koda has been with us for more than a month. That’s far too long for such a sweet pup to wait for his happily ever after.

Newborn kittens have little chance of survival without their mother. Please make every effort to keep kittens with their mothers.

Can’t see mom? The likelihood is not that kittens have been abandoned , but that mom is out looking for food or staying out of sight.

Give our littlest feline friends a chance. Let them be. It’s likely mom will be back at feeding time or when she doesn’t feel threatened by your presence.

Any questions? Call 910-937-1164, message us here or email [email protected]

Last week we found ourselves down to our last bag of Diamond Maintenance dog food and reached out to the community for help.

Over the past few days we have received an overwhelming response and we couldn’t be more grateful to everyone that dropped off or had a package delivered (not so sure our amazing delivery driver was feeling your love though).

Thank you to everyone that came through for our shelter friends! Your support means the world to us.

Our boy Buckley is such a sweetheart. He’s good natured, playful, affectionate and an all-around good boy. We have tried and tried to get someone to take notice and just can’t understand why it has been more than two long months with no one coming to meet him.

Shelter life can be tough. We do all we can to give our friends the care they deserve, but weeks in a shelter environment can take its toll. Most of our adoptable animals go home within a matter of days, so when week after week passed without our happy-go-lucky Buckley getting picked, we were afraid that shelter life might begin to weigh on him. We needed Buckley to get out before he started feeling overwhelmed.

Yesterday we reached out to one of our amazing rescue partners to see if they were able to take on a senior heartworm positive hound. To our delight, they were happy to spring him from the shelter and picked him up this afternoon. Kennel staff did a fun superhero photo shoot with Buckley a few days ago hoping it would get him noticed, so we couldn’t help but share. We couldn’t be happier to see him out of the kennels and straight to a foster home where he can run the yard and play with his furry foster siblings. He’s already fitting right in. He’s such a happy boy!

We’re so grateful for our rescue partners who are able to provide extra care and resources for our special needs friends like Buckley. Congratulations sweet hound boy!

***PUPPY FOSTERS NEEDED***

When our littlest friends arrive at the shelter, it’s always best to keep them out of the shelter environment and placed in a foster home where they can grow in a nurturing, family environment. The shelter is no place for babies to thrive. We have many wonder foster volunteers, but in a community like ours, we see so many come and go due to moves and personal changes.

We are in need of fosters! We specifically need puppy fosters who are able to come in during business hours for pick-up, drop-off and medical checks. All supplies are provided and fostering is such a rewarding experience. Our fosters are a vital part of our success in placing our puppies, kittens and special needs friends into their forever homes.

If you are interested in becoming an OCAS foster, please email [email protected] call 910-937-1164 or message us here. We would love to get you started.

Meet Grasshopper, Ladybug and Junebug!

These three six-year-old hound “siblings” were surrendered to us when their owner was moving away. They were “yard dogs”, have lived outside their whole lives and didn't even have names.

They have never been inside dogs. They have never snuggled on the couch, or understood being a family pet, so they will need a family who is willing to give them the time and patience they need to build confidence and learn what it is like to be an inside dog. They will not understand things like vacuums, or televisions, which can all be very confusing for a six year old pup. Grasshopper, Ladybug and Junebug are very sweet and gentle dogs. They love getting attention and pets and we know that with time and love, they will learn how to fit in to a home environment. But they will also need a home that allows them to be a hound - that means a big fenced yard to explore and sniff and run, a space to nap in the sun. It will take some time and patience (as for all new adopters) for these hounds to adjust to a new life, but we thought that this trio deserved the chance at a new life.

Grasshopper, Ladybug and Junebug were never given monthly heartworm prevention and have all tested positive for heartworms. They will need a special family who will be able to follow up with a veterinarian and get them the treatment they need for a healthy heart.

If you would like to meet Grasshopper, Junebug or Ladybug, please call 910-937-1164 to schedule an appointment after 8am. We would love for you to meet them.
