Are you traveling this holiday season? If so, now is the time to plan for your four-legged friends. Do not wait until the last minute! Ensure your pets are up-to-date on necessary vaccinations. Arrange for a trusted pet sitter. Contact, visit & make reservations with a boarding facility. Check that your pets will be welcome when visiting friends or family. Your local shelter is not a substitution for planning/responsible pet ownership. With proper preparation, the holiday/travelling season can be a stress-free event for both you and your pet(s).

Yesterday, Animal Control Officer White prepared a presentation for those in our community who had expressed interest in coming in to the shelter and speaking with him about OCAS, specifically regarding his role as certified Animal Cruelty Investigator for the county. His goal was to offer transparency, to answer questions, concerns and speak to any misconceptions held in the community. We are grateful to Ms. Debbie Burke for taking the time to come in & have a conversation. Our doors are always open to our citizens. We hope that in the future more will take advantage of the opportunity to tour the facility to not only understand our mission but the laws that shape our actions.

***FEATURED PUP OF THE DAY***
Meet Lucy! Lucy is an 8 year old, female, German Shepherd. She is a big (60 pounds, but we are working at getting her up to a healthier weight), beautiful, senior girl. Lucy is very well behaved - good-natured, gentle, great on a leash and she does well with other dogs too. We don't know Lucy's history, but she came to us underweight and in need of some TLC. Lucy knows her sit command, takes her treats gently and is an all around terrific dog. Lucy deserves a good life filled with love and happiness. If you are looking to open your heart to a senior dog, Lucy will be an amazing companion. Lucy is currently available for adoption at OCAS.

Meet Finn! Finn is a 2 year old Pug mix who has been waiting nearly a month for his forever family. Finn is a little sparkplug, 26 pounds of happy energy. Finn loves meeting new people, does well on a leash and with other dogs and he loves his tennis ball. Finn has tested positive for heartworms, so he will need a special family who will be committed to his treatment and getting him back to a healthy heart. He is such a good boy and sop deserving of a place to call home. You can meet Finn tomorrow (Wednesday), at OCAS.

Our boy Mason and his siblings have been with us for a whole month. That's no way for a sweet playful kittens to spend their days. Mason would love to snuggle up this holiday in a home of his very own. We would love to see some empty kennels.

We are open for adoptions today (Tuesday) and tomorrow from noon to 5:00pm. We are still 10 adoptions short of our goal of at least 100 adoptions each month. You can help us reach it.

Remember that all adult cats and all adult dogs (age 1 and up) have special adoption fees this week. Cats are just $50, dogs are just $110. Don't miss out!

With Thanksgiving on the horizon, we thought we would share a recent adoption success story with you. This isn’t just any ordinary adoption story, but one that includes many people coming together to help a pup in need.

Apollo was adopted from us as a very young puppy. As with all of our adoptions, we hoped that he had found his happily ever after. Unfortunately, his family was not ready for the responsibility of owning a puppy and returned him 6 months later. Apollo had grown into such a handsome boy. He was very active, friendly and playful, but it was clear that he had not ever been taught his puppy manners and was quite unruly. The shelter environment is hard enough for any animal, but for a young pup who needs extra attention, it can be even more difficult. Though staff and volunteers do their best to take time with our shelter friends, Apollo required some extra TLC and we were hesitant to send him out to another adoptive home where he may not succeed.

At just this time, our friends at Camp Mutt reached out to us about fostering a pup at their facility. They hoped to board a dog that needed some extra one-on-one attention and would work with them to help them become ready for an adoptive home. Apollo was the perfect candidate and so we sent him off to camp, knowing that the staff there could help him to be the best pup he could be.

After 2 ½ months of love and hard work, Apollo not only won the hearts of Camp Mutt Staff, but another Camp Mutt family. We are very happy to announce that Apollo, now Chubbs, having become the pup we always knew he could be, has been adopted!

With much happiness (and some tears) Camp Mutt staff sent Chubbs off to his new family. They threw him a party, baked him a cake and staff who were off for the day even came in to give Chubbs some love.

We are so grateful to Josh and the amazing staff at Camp Mutt for taking Chubbs under their wing, providing a loving environment and the training for him to succeed. Chubbs now has a new fur-brother and he will be continuing lessons at Camp Mutt. We are so happy that he is finally home!

Here are a few more photos from the holiday parade on Saturday. We had a wonderful time!

We would like to thank Friends of Animal Services for sponsoring our parade entry, our alumni families, volunteers & fosters who walked with us, and our volunteers who helped us put it all together! A special thank you to volunteers Vicki, Phil, Terry & Lauren for spending hours stringing popcorn, to Alison for cutting SO much fringe, to Cathe for creating a wonderful storybook, and to Animal Control Officers White & Mechaet who helped put it all together (and tear it all apart).

At OCAS it’s a team effort, and we appreciate everyone who made this possible!

These are just some of the reasons we have had animals returned or surrendered to us at OCAS.

Bringing an animal into your family is a commitment and a responsibility. When you adopt an animal you should have already considered the time, energy, cost and care that animal will require. You owe it to that animal to be prepared and thoughtful about how they will fit into your lifestyle, for the duration of their lives.

If you are considering adoption at OCAS, fantastic! Adoption gives a second chance to an animal in need. But before you visit us, please take some time to consider what will be the best fit for you. At OCAS we have dogs and cats of all breeds, sizes and personalities. All pets require love and attention. Some require ample time for exercise and interaction. Do you have a big yard? Does your schedule allow for extensive one-on-one time? Puppies need training and follow through. Are you prepared to house train, and teach your puppy manners? Does your lifestyle allow the time needed to do so? All pets require significant care and attention. You'll need to provide food, litter, flea, tick and heartworm prevention, routine vet care, and then the extras such as professional grooming , toys, treats, and boarding if you travel. Are you prepared for all the costs of owning a pet? Would you be able to provide emergency care if needed? Consider your future. Will you be relocating often? Will you be subject to breed restrictions? Will you be welcoming new family members and will a pet fit into your plans?

Pets are not temporary. Not all pets are right for all people. But with just a little research and planning, you can find the perfect fit for your family. And please remember that OCAS staff is always here to help. Our goal is to facilitate a happy, forever home for all of our friends.

Adoption hours are noon to 5:00 pm Tuesday - Friday and 10:00 am to 3:30 pm Saturdays.

Meet Patrick! Our hound friend Patrick may look serious in his photo, but this 1 1/2 year old is a silly, happy-go-lucky pup. Patrick loves to be outside, meeting new people and getting love. Patrick is still very much an active puppy, who needs to learn his manners to be the best boy that he can be. With some time, patience and TLC, we know that Patrick will be an amazing family companion.

*Patrick was adopted, but he was a bit too active for his family. Sometimes it is just not the right fit. So Patrick is back in search of his forever home.

We have already had three adoptions today (including sweet kittens Jason and Raven), which means we need only 4 more adoptions to reach 1200 animals adopted so far this year! That's nearly 100 more than in all of 2018!

It may be gray outside but you can bring sunshine to a shelter pet's life by choosing adoption!

Adoption hours are until 5pm today and from 10am to 3:30pm tomorrow. We hope to see you.

***OCAS VOLUNTEERS & OCAS ALUMNI NEEDED***

It's nearly time for the Jacksonville Holiday Parade! OCAS has taken part in the parade for the last several years and we are excited to participate again this year.

The parade will take place next Saturday, November 23rd.

We are in need of current OCAS volunteers and OCAS alumni families to walk/ride in the parade. Walkers must be at least 12 years of age ( there will be some room for children and a parent to ride on the "float"), well-behaved alumni dogs and their humans are welcome to participate.

If you are interested in joining us, please email [email protected] or message us here. We will provide participation guidelines and details shortly.

This is one of our favorite days of the year - a chance to visit with our alumni families and share OCAS with the community. We would love to have you join us.

* Please note that this opportunity is for current OCAS volunteers. If you wish to become a volunteer, please select the "Sign Up" link at the top of the page for our information session schedule.

We would like to send a very big thank you to the 4th grade students and teachers at Stateside Elementary. Each year the 4th grade students participate in a service learning project and they reached out to us to see how they could help the shelter. For their first project, students made some delicious (we will take the pups' word for it) and healthy dog treats. Our Miss Daisy and Patrick were the first to try them out and very much approved. We cannot wait to see what other projects these terrific students have in store.

*Daisy has since been adopted, but Patrick is still available!
