Effective Monday, Dec. 29, the National Weather Service has issued a **🚩🚩RED FLAG WARNING 🚩🚩** for some North Carolina counties. Review weather alerts for North Carolina at weather.gov.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create dangerous fire behavior.

Fire danger will be elevated, especially across central North Carolina. While open burning is permitted during a red flag, it is NOT advised. Please postpone all outdoor burning.

Careless debris burning is the leading cause of wildfires in North Carolina, and you are our best defense against wildfire. For wildfire readiness and prevention tips: preventwildfirenc.org

Onslow County is the lifting the County Burn Ban effective immediately. Citizens may now utilize open burning for disposal of vegetative debris that has been generated on their property. This includes items such as leaves, straw, lawn clippings, shrubbery clippings, and sticks and branches.

Onslow County Fire Marshal Jeremy Foster urges anyone choosing to burn use caution. “It’s important to have resources immediately available to control your fire when burning. I recommend water hoses, buckets of water, and hand tools.”

Onslow County is still partly considered being under a severe drought conditions and weather conditions for the upcoming week and weekend are still favorable to have an uncontrolled fire. Should a fire become out of control, citizens need to immediately contact the local fire department for assistance by calling 911.

Burning of garbage, lumber, building materials, cardboard paper and rubber is never allowed. These items must be disposed of at solid waste convenience sites throughout the county. Anyone found to be burning non-vegetative debris could be subject to a citation for illegal burning.

If you have any questions, please contact Onslow County Emergency Services at 910 347-4270 for further information.

UPDATE ON ONSLOW COUNTY BURN BAN – March 24, 2025
Since the implementation of the burn ban on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 5 PM, Onslow County Emergency Services has responded to over 50 outdoor fire incidents. Among these, two fires resulted in structural damage. North Carolina Forestry Service has issued more than 25 warning tickets, along with numerous verbal warnings, and have cited four individuals for violations where fires spread to wooded areas or neighboring properties.

While there is a slight chance of rain this afternoon (less than 20%), it will not be sufficient to improve conditions. Over the next couple of weeks, warm temperatures, low humidity, and high winds will continue to elevate the fire risk. Most of Onslow County remains in the severe fire danger category. As the burn ban remains in effect, enforcement measures may become stricter if necessary.

The primary goal of Onslow County Emergency Services is to inform and educate residents about potential hazards while working to minimize the risk of serious incidents. Overall, residents have responded politely and cooperatively to emergency calls, complying with requests from homeowners or fire departments to extinguish fires, and we appreciate their continued compliance in helping to keep our community safe.

🔥Onslow County Burn Ban Issued Effective Immediately 🔥

Effective immediately Onslow County will implement a County Burn Ban until further notice due to increased fire risk. The burn ban for Onslow County will not allow for any open burning at all until conditions improve for Onslow County. Open burning includes burning leaves, branches, or other plant material. In all cases burning trash, lumber, tires, newspaper, plastics, or other nonnegative material is illegal.

Onslow County Fire Marshal Jeremy Foster says small back yard burns are the primary cause of major wildfires in our area. “Onslow County’s top priority is always to protect the lives and property of the Citizens of our community. Approximately 90 percent of wildfires in Onslow County occur due to open burning in these current conditions, which escapes the property and causes the fires.” The only exception to the County wide burn ban is for the use of outdoor cooking and warmth purposes.
