Wildlife followup: Please be aware that the black bear is still in the area and has been spotted in town, including near the downtown district.

So far the animal hasn't caused issues, has kept to itself and is moving on. We will continue to monitor the situation and take action as necessary, but our wildlife experts have advised us that the bear's natural instinct will be to head out of town. For now, bring inside pets and pet food, and don't approach the bear or try to feed it. Do not attempt to engage the animal or harm it.

Please be sure to keep dispatch lines open for emergencies; we appreciate the reports but want to be ready to serve if an emergency arises.

Everyone loves the Chief Ladiga Trail, especially this black bear who wandered onto the trail today.

We have our animal control and patrol units looking for it and ensuring the trail is clear. In the meantime, be watchful on the trail and give any wild animal plenty of space if you encounter one.

We had over 20 attendees for our first fi****ms safety course!

We spent a few hours on the range this morning, the second day of our two-part course after a classroom session earlier in the week. Officers Riggan, Shears and Cone led the class in target shooting, and the weather held (more or less). It was a great way to cap off the course.

We not only got to get in some target practice, but were also able to drill into the fundamentals of safe handling and basic shooting in a live environment. Our more experienced students were excited to work with police officers to improve their accuracy, and we saw folks who were brand new to handling their fi****ms get much more comfortable between their first shot and their last.

Keep an eye out for our next session!

Master the foundations of firearm safety in our free, two-day firearm safety course, including a range day and information about state and federal laws, self-defense tactics and marksmanship fundamentals.

Classroom Session: Wednesday, July 29, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Jacksonville City Court (911 Public Safety Dr. SW).
Range Day: Saturday, August 1, from 7:30 AM – 10:30 AM at the Jacksonville Range on Snyder Mountain Road.

Important requirements for attendees:
You must supply your own firearm, ammunition, and eye and hearing protection. A ballcap is also required on range day.
