Onslow County would like to thank all of our community partners, sponsors, businesses, and volunteers that helped to make the Essential Foods drive-through such a success. May 28, 2020, will be the last scheduled Essential Foods Drive-through. The event will start at 11 a.m. and run through 1 p.m.

Please note, the drive-through that is normally at Calvary Assembly of God/Living Water Christian School will not be operating this week. Citizens are asked to go to the Richlands Community Outreach Ministries or the Enon Chapel Baptist Church for Essential Foods via drive-thru this week.

Onslow County will continue to work with the community drive-through partners and remain available for the next few weeks to assist citizens who are in a food crisis due to COVID-19 loss of employment or income.

From April 2 through May 21, eight Essential Foods Drive-throughs distributed over 193,000 meals (rough estimate of 9,190 families with each family receiving 21 meals week).

If someone is still needing assistance once this Essential food Drive-through is done, a flyer will be in this week's Essential Foods grocery bag detailing how to obtain assistance with the community partners (Ruach, Enon, Richlands, & Folkstone)

We are within the time period between Mother's Day and Father's Day when we typically celebrate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The day itself is June 15th. During this time consider wearing purple and taking a selfie to help build awareness and advocate for the rights of older adults.

Older Americans Month Facts:
• President John F. Kennedy designated May 1963 as Senior Citizens Month to pay tribute to citizens aged 65 and older. President Jimmy Carter changed the name to Older Americans Month in 1980.
• While different themes are developed each year to highlight a range of topics, the overall goal of Older Americans Month is to celebrate the value older adults bring to our lives, encourage older adults to remain active in their communities, and to increase awareness of activities, programs, and services that help them live healthy, independent lives.
• In 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. Today their numbers reach about 50 million. As the aging population has increased, Older Americans Month has grown with it.
• Through partnerships with an ever-expanding Aging Services Network, Older Americans Month generates awareness about the many programs that are available today. It also helps to share information about activities, programs, and services with rural, urban, and suburban communities across the nation.
• By 2040, the 65 and older population is expected to grow to about 82.3 million, which will represent nearly 22% of the population.
• Older Americans Month gives everyone a chance to join the national conversation on aging.

Staying Connected at Home During COVID-19.

05/14/2020

During this month, make your mark through stories. Stories build community and connect us even when we can’t be physically together. Recalling adventures with childhood friends, that family weekend at the beach, a teacher who helped guide your life, or how you learned you would become a grandparent—all of those stories connect you with your past and the people who have mattered along the way. They help people you love get to know you better and feel closer to you. Looking back at how we got through other tough times can help us manage this challenging time. Sharing what we love about our friends and family members helps them feel stronger and more connected.

Stories can be told over the phone, on the computer, over the backyard fence. They can be told in letters, in pictures, in headlines and photographs collected from newspapers. We don’t have to be together to share our stories and build each other up.

We can make a mark on people’s lives with the stories we share.

Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads our nation's observance of Older Americans Month. The theme this year is "Make Your Mark."

This theme was selected to encourage and celebrate countless contributions that older adults make to our communities. Their time, experience, and talents benefit family, peers, and neighbors every day. Communities, organizations, and individuals of all ages are also making their marks. This year's theme highlights the difference everyone can make- in the lives of older adults, in support of caregivers, and to strengthen communities.

Our Story

Onslow County Senior Services is a department of the Onslow County Government. We are dedicated to serving older adults and assisting their families with aging issues in Onslow County. In cooperation with other organizations, Onslow County Senior Services serves as the focal point of services and activities for all older adults in our county. Our professional staff and volunteers are here to help you with your needs. Our main line will connect you to the program with whom you wish to speak, 910-455-2747.

Our Adult Daycare is open from 7:30am-5:00pm to provide supervised care for adults in a home like atmosphere. This program strives to help each person maintain individual dignity, self-identity and enhance his/her quality of life.

CAP/DA is the Community Alternatives Program for Disabled Adults and is Medicaid funded. CAP/DA serves as an alternative to nursing home care for adults who wish to remain in their homes and communities through supplementing existing formal and informal services.

In-Home is the program designed to enable older adults to remain independent in their homes when for various reasons they become unable to meet their household, nutrition and/or personal care needs. One of the goals of In-Home is to help prevent unnecessary hospitalization or long term care placement.

Nutrition and Transportation are two programs that work hand in hand. Meals on Wheels are offered to those homebound individuals who meet certain criteria. Senior Services has 5 nutrition sites around the county: Jacksonville, Belgrade, Richlands, Sneads Ferry, and Swansboro. Transportation is also available through a partnering with the Onslow United Transit System.

The Senior Center is a good place to join a friend for coffee, make new friends or attend one of the ongoing programs or activities offered at the center daily. We invite you to come by and find a quiet spot to read a book, put a puzzle together, play a game of pool or use one of our many computers. Don’t forget we also offer exercise classes and have fitness equipment!

Other services that are provided include our medical equipment loan program, our assistance with Living Wills and Healthcare Power of Attorneys, and our support groups. Support groups include: Alzheimer’s Support Group, Parkinson’s Support Group, and Diabetic Support Group. Also, if you are in need of help with Medicare, SHIIP (Senior Health Insurance Information Program) volunteers are able to assist you, from answering questions to helping the best plans for your specific situation.

Just call our main line, 910-455-2747, for assistance with any of our programs, or stop by to talk to someone directly.
