In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, Army veteran Laurae Hughes-Cummings of Gray Fox Farm has turned 2 acres of rocky soil into a diverse operation of honeybees, chickens, turkeys, hogs, fruit trees, and vegetables. Laurae has witnessed how interacting with the land can help veterans with service-related anxiety or PTSD, and proudly sells her wares with the Homegrown by Heroes label

Indiana farmer Cindy Chastain served as an Army officer for 31 years, including Deputy Commander of the 1-19th Agribusiness Development Team, deploying to Afghanistan 2009-2010. She is now Farmer Veteran AgrAbility Coordinator for the National AgrAbility Project at Purdue University, helping liaise between AgrAbility, FVC and disabled farmer veterans nationwide. The movement to connect veterans to agriculture is bigger than any one organization. Groups like Growing Veterans in Washington, led by Chris Brown (OIF/USMC), are busy creating community, growing food and teaching farming. Just over two weeks ago the dairy barn of Farmer Veteran Justin Tucker's parents in upstate New York tragically burned to the ground with over 30 cows inside. Today neighboring farmers, led by local Amish, had a barn-raising. They went a long way to bring the farm back into production; America's farmers coming together to save a farm so it can stay with the family who loves it.

Thirteen years today Army National Guardsman David Beardi was called from his home in upstate New York to help recover human remains at Ground Zero. His service did not end there, and a serious wound received in Iraq was followed by 18 months at Walter Reed. When finally home to his family, FVC helped launch David’s farming career by purchasing this Kubota tractor with help of the Bob Woodruff Foundation. David is home now, back with his family, working the land he loves.

Air Force veteran Lee Lichtenwalner and his wife, Dawn spent nearly two decades raising their family in Las Vegas, NV before buying their 11-acre farm tucked away in Columbiana County, OH. Dandelion Lane Farm grows a variety of herbs and vegetables, specializing in naturally grown, heirloom products and delicious value-added products. It is proud to be Ohio’s first Homegrown by Heroes farm.

Francis Lutz served in the US Navy during Vietnam, and now runs Fox River Farm in Sandoval, Illinois, a “small family farm in Southern Illinois dedicated to growing food for people who are interested in quality, taste and their health.” Francis raises 100% grass fed beef and pastured poultry that he can now sell under the Homegrown by Heroes label. www.hgbh.org

Ron Bennett served in the US Air Force, Army and Army National Guard before injuries sustained in Iraq ended his military career. Now he has begun cultivating flowers and raising bees on his farm in Virginia. Ron took his first Chrysanthemums to market, proudly displaying the Homegrown by Heroes logo. Homegrown by Heroes is available to farmers, ranchers and fishers of all military eras. www.hgbh.org
