Congratulations to Corporal Smith, Officer Rand, and Officer Hervey on graduating from the Law Enforcement Bicycle Association Bike Officer course.

Over three days of training and 20 total miles of riding, to include high skill movements and obstacle paths, they are now officially certified.

Having certified bike officers means we are able to provide high visibility patrols through dense crowds and terrains inaccessible to vehicles like at parades and festivals, as well as perform dedicated patrols in neighborhoods, parking lots, or apartment complexes.

A special congratulations to Corporal Smith for receiving the Law Enforcement Bicycle Association "Never give in, Never give up" award. Way to persevere through!

Today we honor and remember one of our own, Detective William Whitehead, who died in the line of duty on May 28, 1981.

Detective Whitehead not only served our community, but was a United States Marine Corps veteran who served during the Vietnam War. Just one week before his death, he was awarded the J. Edgar Hoover Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding investigative work on a series of serious crimes in our city.

Detective Whitehead was taken from us during a brutal altercation conducted by two Marine Corps deserters, ultimately leading to his death.

His courage, dedication, and service to our city and our country will never be forgotten. We honor his legacy, remember his sacrifice, and keep his family, friends, and fellow officers in our thoughts.
