Jacksonville Police Department
Weekly Service Call Overview | June 1, 2026 – June 7, 2026

The Jacksonville Police Department responded to a wide variety of calls for service this past week. Below are just a few highlights from the many incidents handled by JPD officers:

• On 6/1/26 at approximately 9:49 a.m., JPD was dispatched to Ray’s Food Place on N. 5th Street for a reported theft in progress. A JPD officer located and contacted the male suspect near the front entrance of the store, at which point the suspect fled on foot toward Creekside Park. The officer temporarily lost sight of the suspect; however, a short time later, an observant community member who had previously seen the suspect running observed the same male near Chase Bank and notified law enforcement.

As a JPD officer attempted to arrest the suspect, he again fled on foot northbound on N. 5th Street. With assistance from a nearby Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputy, the suspect was ultimately taken into custody near Shafer Lane.

The investigation revealed the suspect had stolen merchandise from two separate Jacksonville businesses earlier that day. He was transported to the Jackson County Jail and charged with Escape III, three counts of Theft III, Disorderly Conduct II, and Offensive Littering.

During the second foot pursuit, one of the involved JPD officers sustained injuries. The officer received medical treatment and is expected to make a full return to duty within the next couple of weeks. (First and second pictures)

• On 6/3/26 at approximately 2:02 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Pheasant Meadow Park area regarding a loose goat. One of the responding officers immediately recognized the furry escape artist from prior “goat-related” calls for service. With assistance from Jacksonville Public Works personnel, officers were able to safely capture the surprisingly fast goat and return him to a nearby pasture. The goat’s owners advised they plan to relocate him out of the area. (Third picture)

• On 6/3/26 at approximately 8:22 p.m., a JPD officer conducted a traffic stop on Highway 238. During the investigation, both the male driver and male passenger were found to have active warrants from a neighboring agency. Chief Hannum responded to assist, and both individuals were taken into custody without incident. They were transported separately to the Jackson County Jail and lodged on their warrants. As Britt season gets underway and thousands of visitors come into town for shows and performances, JPD would like to remind residents to lock their vehicle doors. This week, officers took multiple (UEMV) reports from residents whose vehicles had been rummaged through overnight. Thankfully, nothing of significant value was stolen; however, the common factor in each case was unlocked vehicles.

Please help protect your property by making it a habit to lock your vehicle every time you leave it.

Have an amazing week, Jacksonville!

Jacksonville Police Department
Weekly Service Call Overview
May 25, 2026 – May 31, 2026

The Jacksonville Police Department responded to a wide variety of calls for service throughout the past week. Below are just a few highlights from the many incidents officers handled in and around our community:

On 5/27/26 at approximately 6:17 p.m., a JPD officer conducted a traffic stop on a dark-colored SUV near Ray’s Food Place on N. 5th Street. The male driver’s information was checked through ECSO Dispatch and he was found to have an active warrant from a neighboring agency. The male was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Jackson County Jail. The driver also had a dog in the vehicle, which was released to a family member instead of being transported to “doggie jail” (Animal Control). (First picture)

On 5/29/26 at approximately 3:51 p.m., a JPD officer conducted a traffic stop after observing several traffic violations near N. 4th Street and E. F Street. During the stop, the male driver was found to have multiple active warrants from neighboring agencies. A second JPD officer arrived to assist, and the driver was taken into custody without further incident. He was later lodged at the Jackson County Jail. (Second picture)

On 5/31/26 at approximately 12:07 a.m., a JPD officer conducted a traffic stop on an Acura SUV after observing a traffic violation. The male driver was found to be operating the vehicle with a criminally suspended misdemeanor-level driver’s license and was taken into custody without incident. During the investigation, officers discovered the male passenger also had active felony warrants from neighboring agencies (yes, plural). The passenger was additionally found to be in possession of a stolen firearm, and co***ne was located during a search. Both males were separately transported to the Jackson County Jail by two JPD units. (Third and fourth picture)

As we turn the calendar page into June, the Jacksonville Police Department would also like to remind residents and visitors that several side street parking areas around Britt Hill and nearby residential neighborhoods now have active parking restrictions for non-residents. These zones are clearly marked and display the associated citation fine amount ($75). Please pay close attention to where you park — not only to avoid a citation, but also to help be a good neighbor to residents.

Stay safe Jacksonville, and thank you for your ongoing support.

The Jacksonville Police Department (JPD) responded to a wide variety of calls for service during the week of May 18, 2026 – May 24, 2026. Below are just a few examples highlighting the work our officers perform each week to help keep our community safe.

On 5/18/26 at approximately 10:24am, a JPD officer observed a vehicle traveling 47 mph in a marked 35 mph zone. The officer briefly lost sight of the vehicle as it entered the downtown area, but recognized the female driver from previous interactions and had reason to believe where she may have gone. The officer later located the vehicle at Creekside Park, where the driver accelerated away at a high rate of speed northbound. Due to numerous pedestrians and activity near local businesses and a nearby coffee shop, the officer did not pursue the vehicle.

A short time later, the officer located the vehicle parked behind a nearby duplex with the engine still running and the driver’s side door open. The female driver had reportedly run into an apartment in an attempt to avoid contact with law enforcement, leaving her young child unattended in the backseat of the vehicle. The officer eventually made contact with the female involved. Based on the investigation and evidence gathered, the female was arrested and lodged at the Jackson County Jail on charges of Reckless Driving and Reckless Endangerment. The child was safely released to a family member.

On 5/21/26 at approximately 10:15pm, a JPD officer observed a dark-colored SUV traveling westbound on E. California Street toward downtown Jacksonville. The vehicle displayed expired registration from 2024 and was also confirmed to be uninsured. A traffic stop was conducted near People’s Bank.

During the investigation, the female driver was found to be operating the vehicle while suspended at the criminal misdemeanor level. The driver also did not have the court-mandated Ignition Interlock Device (IID) installed from a prior DUII conviction. The female was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Jackson County Jail. (First picture)

On 5/24/26 at approximately 7:38pm, a JPD officer conducting a speed enforcement patrol observed a teen driver traveling northbound on N. Oregon Street at a high rate of speed. Radar confirmed the vehicle was traveling 50 mph in a marked 25 mph residential zone. The teen driver was cited, and his parents were notified regarding the dangerous driving behavior.

Approximately 30 minutes prior to that stop, another driver was also cited for traveling 50 mph in a 25 mph zone near the Jacksonville Post Office. JPD has noticed a significant increase in speeding violations this past week. We encourage everyone to slow down, pay attention to posted speed limits, and help keep our neighborhoods safe. The speeds officers are observing are not only costly in fines — they are simply dangerous. (Second picture)

Additionally, a local Jacksonville resident recently located an envelope containing cash in the C Street area. If you believe you may be the owner of the missing funds, please contact our records clerk during regular business hours. Additional identifying information and proof will be required prior to any potential release of the property.

This Memorial Day, the Jacksonville Police Department honors and remembers the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness have protected the freedoms we enjoy every day. As we gather with family and friends this holiday, we encourage our community to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day and remember those who gave their lives in defense of our nation. From all of us at the Jacksonville Police Department, we extend our deepest gratitude to our fallen heroes and their families. We will never forget their sacrifice.

We appreciate the continued support from our Jacksonville community.

JACKSONVILLE, Ore. (May 20, 2026) — Earlier today at approximately 9:16am, Jacksonville Police were alerted by a local resident who was hiking in the Rich Gulch / Britt Gardens area. The hiker reported seeing a “full grown” cougar near a trail by the Panorama View Point area. A JPD officer responded and searched the area but was unable to locate the animal.

Residents and visitors utilizing local hiking trails and outdoor areas are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings and use caution.

If you encounter a cougar in the wild:
• Stay calm and do not run
• Maintain eye contact and slowly back away
• Make yourself appear larger by raising your arms or opening a jacket
• Keep children and pets close to you
• Make loud noises and speak firmly

Cougars are a natural part of Oregon’s wildlife, and sightings can occur in rural and wooded areas surrounding Jacksonville.

Please report any aggressive behavior or immediate public safety concerns to ECSO 911 dispatch or law enforcement.

Jacksonville Police will continue to monitor the area for any additional signs of the animal.

The Jacksonville Police Department (JPD) responded to a wide variety of calls for service during the week of May 11, 2026 – May 17, 2026. Below are just a few highlights from the many incidents and community events our officers handled throughout the week:

On 5/14/26 at approximately 6:09 PM, Jacksonville Police were dispatched to the 3600 block of Oregon Highway 238 for a reported grass fire. JPD officers arrived first on scene and confirmed there was active fire in the area while making contact with two males at the location. Investigation revealed the fire was a controlled burn being conducted by the property owner prior to fire season officially going into effect on 5/15/26. The individuals had already established a fire line and had water available on scene if needed. Jacksonville Fire and Applegate Fire personnel also responded, and the scene was ultimately turned over to fire personnel. While this incident was determined to be a lawful controlled burn, it serves as an important reminder that fire season is now underway. If you see something concerning, say something. Working together as a community can potentially help prevent a major wildfire. (First picture)

On 5/15/26 at approximately 9:42 AM, a JPD officer on routine patrol conducted a traffic stop near the Chevron station on 5th Street. Investigation revealed the male driver was operating the vehicle while criminally suspended and without the required ignition interlock device (IID) stemming from a previous DUII conviction. The driver also failed to provide proof of insurance. The male was taken into custody and transported to the Jackson County Jail where he was lodged on the misdemeanor charge of Driving While Suspended. (Second picture)

On 5/16/26 at approximately 4:47 PM, a JPD officer observed a red dirt bike without license plates in the area of W. California Street and W. Main Street. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop; however, the rider fled at a high rate of speed westbound toward Highway 238. Due to the reckless manner of driving and in the interest of public safety, the pursuit was immediately terminated. The rider was described as wearing a black helmet and black sweatshirt. The case remains under investigation.

On 5/16/26 at approximately 8:13 PM, a JPD officer conducted a traffic stop near Ray’s Food Place on 5th Street. The male driver was found to have an active warrant for his arrest. With assistance from a Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputy, the male was safely taken into custody and lodged at the Jackson County Jail. The vehicle was impounded and transported to “car jail.”

On 5/17/26 at approximately 11:48 AM, a JPD unit was dispatched to a reported structure fire at a retail toy store located at 180 W. California Street. A JPD officer arrived on scene within one minute of dispatch. Upon arrival, there was no active fire observed. Jacksonville Fire Department personnel responded and checked the area. Based on witness statements, a small fire had occurred next to the building but was quickly extinguished by a nearby restaurant employee prior to emergency personnel arriving. We appreciate the quick actions and community assistance that helped prevent the situation from escalating further. The incident is under investigation.

In addition to responding to calls for service, Jacksonville officers also had the opportunity this week to connect with community members during a Wildfire Preparedness Forum at JVFD Station 19, as well as a True Crime Symposium held at the Bigham Knoll Campus. While very different events, both highlight the Jacksonville Police Department’s continued commitment to community engagement, education, and public safety. (Third and Fourth pictures)

The Jacksonville Police Department (JPD) remains committed to proactive policing, rapid response, and strong partnerships with neighboring agencies.

This is just a small snapshot of the many calls for service the Jacksonville Police Department responded to during the week of May 4, 2026 – May 11, 2026.

• On 5/5/26 at approximately 8:45pm, a Jacksonville Police officer on routine patrol observed a large “party bus” parked in the southbound lane of travel on S. Oregon Street near the intersection with Main Street. Jacksonville is a popular tourist destination, and JPD understands that tour buses and similar vehicles often navigate tight streets throughout town. However, approximately 10 minutes later, the officer returned to the area and observed several vehicles having to enter the opposite lane of travel to safely drive around the bus. Situations like this create unnecessary risks for both motorists and pedestrians, especially when visibility is limited by large vehicles.

The officer contacted the driver and discussed safer ways to conduct passenger loading and unloading operations, including pointing out a convenient designated loading zone located only a short distance away. As tourist season ramps up and traffic increases, JPD encourages everyone to remain mindful of roadway safety whether driving, walking, or riding bicycles. If you observe a potentially dangerous traffic situation, please contact us so we can help keep everyone safe. The driver was given a warning rather than a citation.

• On 5/6/26 at approximately 4:26pm, a JPD officer was dispatched regarding a reported Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle (UUMV), commonly referred to as a stolen vehicle. A local resident reported that his SUV, which was listed for sale, had been taken for a “quick test drive” by a female he had just met. After approximately 30–40 minutes with no communication, the seller became concerned the vehicle had been stolen and contacted 911.

The responding officer searched the area, including portions of west Medford near Lewis Park, but was initially unable to locate either the vehicle or the driver. The phone number provided by the female also went unanswered. Through follow-up investigation, the officer identified the female and responded to her residence area. At approximately 5:19pm, the vehicle was located parked near the residence with the seller present. The female explained the test drive had taken longer than expected and that she had accidentally left her phone behind. Officers discussed the importance of maintaining communication during private sales and test drives. The vehicle was returned to the owner and no charges are expected.

This incident serves as a good reminder that when buying or selling valuable property with strangers, clear communication and safety precautions are important for everyone involved.

• On 5/6/26 at approximately 3:46pm, Jacksonville Police officers were dispatched to the Chevron station on 5th Street regarding a reported trespassing complaint involving a female subject. Upon arrival, officers contacted the female, who had reportedly attempted to drink from an employee’s personal beverage cup and was making concerning statements. Officers observed that the female had fresh minor injuries but was unable to explain how she received them. Additionally, she could not identify her name, age, or even the city she was currently in.

Based on her condition and statements, officers determined she was unable to care for herself safely and placed her on a Police Officer Hold (POH). She was transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center and released into the care of trained medical and mental health professionals. No criminal charges are expected at this time. (First picture)

• On 5/7/26 at 5:00pm, the Jacksonville Police Department proudly hosted the first-ever J.O.I.N. (Jacksonville Outreach and Inspiration Network) teen outreach event at Doc Griffin Park. The event was spearheaded by Officer Johnson and featured members of Jacksonville Fire Department and the Jackson County Juvenile Corrections Department, including an opportunity for attendees to see the department’s new fire truck up close. (Second Picture)

J.O.I.N. is designed to build positive relationships between local youth and first responders through mentorship, leadership development, and community engagement opportunities. JPD would like to thank the following community sponsors for helping make the event possible: Black Barn Kitchen & Deli, South Medford Walmart, and Rays Food Place.

If you missed this event, stay tuned to our social media pages for future J.O.I.N. events planned later this year.
