This morning, Southwestern Central School District teachers and staff took part in the United Way of Chautauqua County’s interactive “A.L.I.C.E. Experience,” gaining a firsthand look at the difficult financial decisions many working families face every day.
Led by Katie Castro and United Way of Chautauqua County Executive Director Amy Rohler, the two-hour experience had participants step into the roles of families navigating a simulated month with limited financial resources. They faced decisions involving housing, child care, transportation, food and unexpected expenses, all while trying to make ends meet.
A.L.I.C.E. stands for “Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed” and represents individuals and families who are working but still struggle to afford basic needs.
According to United Way data, 48% of households in Chautauqua County are experiencing financial hardship, including 18% living in poverty and another 30% classified as A.L.I.C.E. The experience provided Southwestern staff with greater insight into the challenges faced by members of our community and the barriers that can impact financial stability.
