🧠🔊 Noise Pollution and the Dementia Brain

One of the most overlooked triggers in dementia care is noise.

To the healthy brain, background sounds may feel manageable:
A television playing.
Multiple conversations at once.
A barking dog.
Kitchen dishes clanging.
A loud restaurant.
A crowded family gathering.
A vacuum cleaner running.
Traffic.
Phones ringing.

But to the dementia brain, these sounds can feel overwhelming, disorienting, and even threatening.

As dementia progresses, the brain loses some of its ability to filter, organize, and prioritize sensory information. The nervous system becomes overloaded more easily. What we call “background noise” may no longer stay in the background.

This can deeply affect proprioception, spatial awareness, emotional regulation, concentration, balance, and the person’s ability to feel safe in their environment.

Imagine trying to think clearly while ten radios are playing at the same time.

The dementia brain may respond by becoming:
Agitated
Angry
Fearful
Combative
Restless
Withdrawn
Emotionally flooded

Sometimes what looks like a “behavior problem” is actually a sensory overload problem.

Care partners become detectives of the environment.

Pay attention to:
🔹 Is the television too loud?
🔹 Are multiple people talking at once?
🔹 Is there constant stimulation without periods of calm?
🔹 Is the environment echoing or chaotic?
🔹 Are sudden sounds startling your loved one?
🔹 Does the person become calmer when noise is reduced?

Many people living with dementia do better with:
✨ Soft voices
✨ Gentle pacing
✨ Predictable rhythms
✨ Calm music
✨ Reduced clutter and stimulation
✨ One conversation at a time
✨ Quiet moments for nervous system recovery

The goal is not silence.
The goal is nervous system safety.

When we reduce unnecessary sensory stress, we often reduce distress, agitation, pacing, and emotional outbursts.

Sometimes healing begins not with more stimulation…
but with less.

I know I'm posting way too many pictures, but there are just so many good ones! Our May Kentucky Derby Celebration was busy with making our own race horses and then racing them. In our welcome we talked about some race trivia and learned a little about the races. Our June sponsor was Treasured Memories represented by Rob Akers. They shared a little about their services in the community including burial, cremation and even cremation for your pets. Treasured Memories made a donation to the Memory Cafe to help cover the costs of the food and crafts as well as providing 3 door prizes that were given out at the end of the Cafe. Carolyn then took the floor, leading us in making our own race horses. This was a long hands on project, with results everyone was proud of. We then had 4 heats with 4 horses each and then a final where the winners went head-to-head for the Running of the Roses. The participants could represent themselves on the race track or pick their favorite volunteer to move their horse. A large die was thrown to determine how far your horse moved down the track. Winners of each meet won a gift card provided by JUMC Young at Heart (Y@H).

Everyone left a winner, taking home a rose, a horse and a treat bag from Home Helpers of Jamestown.

Our next Cafe is Tuesday, June 16 at 1:30 (always the 3rd Tuesday). It is a Beach Theme. We will have special guest teaching us about sh****ng, a beach craft and always a favorite - Beach Volleyball.

We are looking forward to sharing another Moment in Time with you!

Ahoy there matey! Our Pirate Cafe is complete without loosing anyone to the plank or deep blue sea. We all had fun dressing up, singing songs and playing games all with the Pirate theme. Our hospitality team, had our snacks ready for all the Mateys to grab a plate before jumping into our program. Our sponsorship this month was Treva Fisher and the estate of her late husband Glenn Fisher, Jr. Treva volunteered at one of our first cafe's and she and her husband's estate wanted to make sure that our fun and supportive program, was able to continue for the benefit of the community. We are so thankful for their support. We also said good bye to our friend Richard Howle, who had been a member for many years. After welcoming comments, we jumped right into our craft, making pirates hats out of newspaper. This was a great craft for reminiscing making something like this in our youth. We then decorated them and wore them throughout our program. Robin Gentile followed with music and movement of the pirate type. We were playing instruments, singing songs and waving seaweed. These familiar songs had everyone's attention. Sally then led us in a spirited "Pass the B***y" game. We had 5 artifacts: compass, treasure map, parrot, pirate flag, and pirate hat. While music was playing the artifacts were passed around the room. The volunteers acted as runners between the tables, which was entertaining in itself!. If you were holding an artifact when the music stopped you got a b***y bag (full of candy). We then tossed a big die. If it landed on the artifact you were holding you could trade in your b***y bag for a brick of gold (holding candy and a gift card - Thanks to JUMC Young at Heart!). We also had treat bags provided by Home Helpers of Jamestown and BrightStar Care for the participants to take home.

Our next cafe is Tuesday May 19th (Always the Third Tuesday!) and it will be all about the Kentucky Derby. We will be making our own race horses and having a race to see who will win the Roses! Feel free to wear your decorated hats!

Thanks for joining us for this Moment in Time!
