Employee Spotlight: Mike "The hurricane" Winne 🚑

Mike has been in EMS longer than most of our employees have been alive, and his experience shows in everything he does.

He is constantly teaching, guiding, and helping new EMTs and medics grow in their careers. On intense calls, everyone knows it’s go-time when Mike flips his hat backwards — earning him the nickname “Hurricane” from everyone who knows and loves him.

Thank you, Mike, for your dedication, leadership, and the lasting impact you continue to make in EMS.

"I STARTED MY EMS CAREER IN JULY 1979 IN MAPLE SPRINGS VFD AND JOINED BEMUS POINT IN 1983- I WAS HIRED AT ALSTAR IN APRIL OF 1991,AND BECAME A CREW CHIEF/FIELD SUPERVISOR IN SEPT OF 1998..I HAVE BEEN WITH ALSTAR NOW FOR 35 YEARS.. I SPENT 20 YEARS TEACHING EMT CLASSES AT JCC WITH RON HASSON AND MADE A LOT OF NEW EMS FRIENDS ALONG THE WAY-- I AM MARRIED 20 YEARS TO MY FABULOUS WIFE,SHERI, WHO JUST RETIRED FROM UPMC IN APRIL 2026.. I HAVE 2 BOYS,AND 3 STEP CHILDREN,AND 5 GRANDCHILDEN—
IN OUR OFF TIME WE ENJOY CAMPING,AND WORKING AROUND THE HOUSE.
I HAVE BEEN IN EMS FOR SO MANY YEARS,IT HAS BEEN CRAZY TO SEE HOW MUCH EMS HAS EVOLVED FROM MY DAYS OF "JOHNNIE AND ROY" WHERE I STARTED---IN THE FALL OF 1983 I HAD TAKEN MY BASIC EMT COURSE AT JCC WITH EMT INSTRUCTORS TOMMY DORMAN AND GREG PATERNITI. WHAT A BLAST THAT WAS—I HAD LEARNED SO MUCH FROM WATCHING TV AND THEN TAKING THE EMT CLASS ,I THOUGHT I WAS READY, BUT AT THE SAME TIME IS SCARED TO DEATH..
I HAD PLAYED AROUND WITH EMS FOR A WHILE TO SEE WHERE IT TAKES ME-I HAD DECIDED TO REFRESH MY EMT IN THE FALL OF1985 WITH RON HASSON AT JCC. A LITTLE WHILE AFTERWARDS, I BECAME A CLI AND THEN A CIC IN 1994 AND WAS TEACHING MY OWN EMT BASIC REFRESHER CLASS AT JCC UP TO 2013--I AM STILL CURRENTLY WORKING AS A FULL TIME PARAMEDIC AT ALSTAR AND LOVE IT. IT HAS BEEN AN ONGOING,AMAZING AND EDUCATIONAL CAREER BETWEEN WORKING AT ALSTAR FOR 35 YEARS ,SPENDING MY TIME AS SENIOR PARAMEDIC IN THE BEMUS POINT FIRE DEPARTMENT FOR 43 YEARS , A FIRE CHIEF FOR 11 YEARS AND IN THE FIRE SERVICE FOR 47 YEARS--AND NOW A LIFE MEMBER.
I HAVE SEEN ALOT AND DONE ALOT OVER 48 YEARS, I STILL WONDER HOW I DONE IT. JUST WHEN YOU THINK YOU HAVE SEEN IT ALL,YOU SEE SOMETHING DIFFERENT..YOU ARE ALWAYS LEARNING IN THIS FIELD EVERY DAY—TO ALL THE NEW EMTS/PARAMEDICS COMING INTO THIS FIELD,REMEMBER YOUR ORIGINAL EMT CLASS WAS JUST A STEPPING STONE INTO THIS FIELD—YOUR CLASSROOM NOW IS IN THE BACK OF THAT AMBULANCE WITH REAL LIVE PATIENT'S IN NEED OF YOUR SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE..
I HAVE MANAGED TO BE THE "OLD GUY" NOW, AND I'M STILL TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH THE YOUNGER AND NEW GENERATION OF EMS PROVIDERS AND STILL TEACHING THE NEWER EMTS SOMETHING NEW EVERY TIME I COME TO WORK—I ALWAYS SAY ," IT WORKED IN THE 80'S AND 90'S AND STILL WORKS TODAY"'.
OVER THE YEARS I HAVE SEEN AND HELPED MANY FOLKS IN THEIR TIME OF NEED,WEATHER IT WAS AT 300 IN THE MORNING OR IN THE COLD DEAD OF WINTER—
I HOPED TO HAVE BEEN A GOOD INFLUENCE ON A LOT OF FOLKS DURING MY TIME AS A TEACHER, FTO,EMT,SUPERVISOR,PARAMEDIC,911 DISPATCHER AND JUST A FRIEND..
MY EARLY PLANS TO RETIRE THIS YEAR HAVE CHANGED AND I WILL PROBABLY STICK AROUND FOR ANOTHER YEAR OR SO—UNTIL THEN KEEP ON SAVING LIVES ONE CALL AT A TIME AND NEVER STOP LEARNING..""

🌟 Employee Spotlight: Elizabeth Lutgen !!

Libby has been serving our community as an EMT and has recently completed paramedic school. She’ll be testing soon to earn her paramedic certification, and we couldn’t be more excited for her as she reaches this major milestone in her EMS career.

If you’ve worked with Elizabeth, you know she’s almost always wearing a smile and brings a positive attitude wherever she goes. Whether it’s helping a partner, assisting a patient, or jumping in wherever needed, she’s always willing to lend a hand and be a team player!

Please join us in wishing Elizabeth good luck on her upcoming paramedic exams and congratulating her on this incredible accomplishment! 🚑👏

“I’ve been in EMS for 3 years this August. I love this job because I love caring for people and no day is ever the same. When I’m not at work I enjoy spending time with my fiancé Jack and my two cats Kevin and Timothy. I love going anywhere from big cities like NYC to the middle of nowhere like Amish Country Ohio. My favorite hobbies include going to zoos and aquariums, concerts, traveling and fishing! I also enjoy playing the violin. I love anything that has to do with animals or music! “

🚑✨ Employee Spotlight: Kaylee Royce ✨🚑

This week we’re shining the spotlight on Kaylee Royce!

Kaylee started her EMS journey right here with us by taking our in-house EMT class — and four years later, she’s still out there making a difference every day as a dedicated EMT.

When she’s not helping patients, Kaylee is a huge animal enthusiast and probably has a camera roll filled with more pets than people (as it should be 🐾).

Thank you, Kaylee, for four years of caring for our communities, supporting your coworkers, and bringing compassion to every shift. We’re proud to have watched your EMS career grow right here at ALSTAR! 👏🚑

“When I’m not working I’m usually at a coffee shop or at school studying and when I do take a break from everything my fiancé and I try to travel and try as many local coffee shops as possible or spend time with our 3 cats, Gigi, Phoebe, and Cleo.

I’ve been in EMS for 4 years and one of my favorite parts of it is being able to teach new EMTs how to do the job, communicate with patients, and find their confidence as a provider.”

Today we remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

As we spend time with family and friends this Memorial Day, we pause to reflect on those who gave everything for the freedoms we enjoy every day.

From all of us at ALSTAR EMS, thank you to our fallen heroes and to the families who carry their legacy forward. 🇺🇸

As EMS Week comes to a close, we want to take a moment to recognize the incredible people who make this profession what it is. Long hours, missed holidays, sleepless nights, chaotic scenes, difficult calls, and countless lives impacted — our crews continue to show up every single day with compassion, professionalism, and dedication.

These new awards were especially meaningful because the recipients were selected by the hospital staff — the people who work alongside them every day and see firsthand the difference they make.

Congratulations to our 2026 award recipients:

🏆 Donna Elderkin – UPMC Chautauqua EMS Provider of the Year
🏆 Donna Elderkin – ALSTAR EMS South Division Provider of the Year
🏆 Tim Tresler – ALSTAR EMS North Division Provider of the Year

🚑 EMS Week Appreciation 🚑

This week is all about recognizing the dedication, sacrifice, compassion, and hard work of EMS providers everywhere — and today we were able to celebrate our own incredible team in a great way!

A huge thank you to HotSpot Cafe for setting up in our parking lot and providing lunch for our staff. Nothing brings people together quite like good food and good company after long shifts serving the community.

We were also honored to welcome representatives from the office of Senator George Borrello and the office of Congressman Nick Langworthy who stopped by to share lunch with us and recognize the important work EMS professionals do every single day.

To all of our EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, wheelchair staff, educators, mechanics, supervisors, and support personnel — thank you for everything you do for our patients and communities. EMS never stops, and neither do you. 💙🚑

🚑 Employee Spotlight: Samantha Stokes 🚑

This week’s spotlight shines on Samantha Stokes, one of our dedicated Paramedics here at Alstar EMS!

Samantha is the definition of “always learning.” Whether she’s taking another class, sharpening her skills, or diving deeper into patient care knowledge, she’s constantly pushing herself to grow in EMS. But what really makes Samantha stand out is her willingness to help others learn too.

We’re proud to have Samantha as part of the Alstar family and thankful for the passion, patience, and dedication she brings every day. 👏🚑

“I like to stay busy—mostly vacuuming my German shepherd’s never-ending fur like it’s a full-time job. I’m Seneca Native American.

My girlfriend and I have two dogs, Khloe (American Bully) and KyloRen (German Shepherd).

I play Call of Duty (and yes, I’m actually good).

I’m a proud homebody with a slight plant addiction.

I’m also absolutely obsessed with eagles and hummingbirds”

🚑💙 EMS WEEK 2026 💙🚑

This week, we celebrate the CURRENT providers still answering the calls, the FUTURE providers working hard in classrooms and clinicals, and the RETIRED providers who paved the way for all of us.

EMS isn’t just a job — it’s missed holidays, cold coffee, late-night tones, teamwork, dark humor, compassion, and showing up for strangers on some of the worst days of their lives. From EMTs and Paramedics to dispatchers, instructors, mechanics, supervisors, and support staff… THANK YOU for everything you do.

Whether you’ve been in EMS for 30 years or 30 days, this week is for YOU. 🚑
