The Jamestown Police Department is asking local businesses and cashiers to remain alert after an attempt was made to use a counterfeit $100 bill at a local convenience store. In this case, the individual attempted to make a small purchase using a large denomination bill in an effort to receive a large amount of legitimate currency back as change.

Please use extra diligence when accepting large bills, especially for small purchases. Take a moment to inspect the bill and do not allow customers to rush or distract you during the transaction. Counterfeit incidents often rely on speed, confusion, and pressure to avoid detection.

Cashiers and business owners are encouraged to use counterfeit detection methods such as checking the security strip, watermark, color-shifting ink, and paper texture. If something does not feel right, trust your instincts and notify a supervisor or law enforcement.

We appreciate the partnership of our local businesses in helping protect the community and prevent financial loss. If you have information related to counterfeit currency activity, please contact the Jamestown Police Department at 701-252-1000.
