Wild Ozarks

Wild Ozarks We are a group of folks dedicated to preserving biodiversity and the ecosystem in which it thrives.

We manage of a whole host of wild species as we spread both awareness and information about why it is important through ecological tourism.

While out of a ecological survey, I came across a very rare sight! As I was hiking up the creek bed I happened upon what I believe to be a 3ft long, Plain Bellied water snake. That was curled around some drift wood on a stone in the middle of this creek bed. I approached him figuring he was sunbathing on the bright day we where having only to then realize that he had very recently passed away from choking on a very large Plains Leopard Frog. Which is also a water centered species, but it's not often you just stumble across something like this.

The Prairie Chicken is a group of ground dwelling Grouse once extremely prevalent throughout the Prairies of North America ranging from Canada to southern Texas and everywhere in between. With estimates putting their numbers around 16 million before the last great collapse of the American Eco-system. These birds now only inhabit a mere sliver of their vast historic range with population numbers of both subspecies being a mere fraction of its once great population. With there only being 30,000 of the Lesser Prairie Chicken left and the Greater Prairie Chicken around 200,000 individuals left. While one of the verities called the Heath Hen is now completely extinct in its ranges of the Eastern United States. These guys are a very important part of the ecosystem and are in great need of being propped up to go back to filling their niche right between Quail and Turkeys. As well as being an irreplaceable part of our history, having been such a major food source for so many over history. We hope to one day start a breeding and re-introduction program set up to help these birds make a comeback in Arkansas.

One of my favorite under-rated species! This is the Ozark Hellbender, one of only two "giant" salamander species in North America. The other being a close subspecies called the Eastern Hellbenders, but one of their closest living relatives is actually the Chinese Gaint Salamander. These guys are only found in North Arkansas & South Missouri little information about their historical range can be found namely due to the inability to find evidence of their past range. With only less than 600 left in the wild, they are on the critically endangered list. Some including myself believe their range was much larger. But due to the collapse of the American eco-system as well as their sensitivity to changes in the environment they are still in a constant population decline. One thing leading to the idea of them having much larger range is the current range of their close relatives. To be more like that of the Eastern variety which has a much larger range, or even the Chinese Gaint Salamander. Which potentially has evidence pointing to them once having a much larger historical range, even up into Korea & Japan rather than just mainland China. These guys take 7 years to reach reproductive age and live for 30 years. They are in dire need for the protection of both them and their habitat to potentially allow them to make a return. The below photo was taken by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Some photos of one of the beautiful caves located right at the basin of a 100ft waterfall that runs most of the year but appears to have been year round at one point in its history.
