PUBLIC AWARENESS NOTICE

Although the City of Jasper does not currently utilize License Plate Reader (LPR) cameras, we want to ensure our citizens are aware of recent actions taken by the State of Florida.

Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) have revoked authorization for LPR cameras located within rights-of-way on Florida state highways.

We are sharing this information simply to keep our community informed about changes that may affect the use of this technology on state roadways throughout Florida.

An Otterly Interesting Morning in Jasper!

Today, the Jasper Police Department, along with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, responded to Foodway in reference to a local otter running around outside the building.

Chief Pepin and Sergeant Fraley were able to safely wrangle our furry little visitor and get him secured in a can until help arrived.

FWC responded and took custody of the otter, relocating him to an undisclosed location where we’re told he can get back to doing otter things and hopefully live happily in a nice, big pond.

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 18, 2026


Let’s Work Together to End Drunk Driving!

Jasper, FL— From August 19 through September 7, 2026, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will be working alongside the Jasper Police Department to deter drunk driving and prevent tragedies during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The message is clear: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

During the 2024 Labor Day holiday (6 p.m. August 30 - 5:59 a.m. September 3), there were 505 traffic crash fatalities nationwide. Of these 505 fatalities, 34% (170) involved a drunk driver. Seventy-seven percent of the impaired drivers killed had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .15 or higher.

Among drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 who were killed in crashes over the Labor Day holiday in 2024, 40% of those drivers were drunk, with BACs of .08 or higher. During this same Labor Day Holiday there were two impaired driver arrests in Jasper, one of which resulted in a traffic crash with serious bodily injuries.

“We want our community members to understand that it’s our first priority to keep people safe, so we’re asking everyone to plan ahead if they know they’ll be out drinking,” said Chief Scott Pepin.

“The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is an awareness effort to get the message out that drunk driving is illegal and it kills. Let’s make this a partnership between the Jasper Police Department and drivers: Help us protect the community and put an end to this dangerous behavior.”

If a driver intends to drink during a Labor Day festivity, he or she should plan ahead for a safe ride home by securing a designated driver or calling a taxi or rideshare. They shouldn’t wait until after drinking to plan how to get somewhere. Impairment clouds a person’s judgment and endangers others on the road.

If a driver finds they are unable to drive, they should give their keys to a sober driver so that person can get them home safely. When a friend has been drinking and is considering driving, friends should be proactive — take away the keys and help them get a sober ride home. If anyone spots a drunk driver, contact Hamilton County Dispatch at 386-792-1001 or dial 911.

As the first day of school is just around the corner, the Jasper Police Department's Officer Tillman would like to remind everyone to be mindful of the information shared in those exciting first-day-of-school photos.

We love seeing our community celebrate special milestones, but a few simple precautions can help protect your child's privacy and safety.

**✅ DO:**
• Check the background of your photo for addresses, street signs, or other identifying information.
• Use your social media privacy settings so only friends and family can view your posts.
• Share the smiles and excitement while keeping personal information private.

**🚫 DON'T:**
• Post your child's full name.
• Reveal their school, teacher, grade level, or bus number.
• Share information that could identify where your child lives or their daily routine.

A few extra seconds before posting can go a long way in helping keep our children safe.

At the Jasper Police Department, safety isn't just about people—it's about protecting the animals that call our community home, too.

Today, Captain Smith assisted in safely picking up a young kitten that was found near **103 Central Ave.

Public safety means looking out for everyone—our citizens, our pets, and even the smallest members of our community. Every act of kindness helps make Jasper a safer and more compassionate place to live.

The kitten is now available for adoption through **Hamilton County Animal Control**. If you're interested in giving this sweet girl a loving forever home, please contact them for more information.

🚗🎒 Safety Tip Tuesday: Teen Driver Safety
As students head back to school, the Jasper Police Department wants to remind everyone that safe driving starts the moment you get behind the wheel. These habits aren't just important during the school year—they're life-saving every day of the year.

If you're a teen driver:

🛑 Put your phone away. Texts, calls, and social media can wait.
🚗 Always wear your seat belt—every trip, every time.
⚠️ Obey speed limits, especially in school zones and neighborhoods.
👀 Stay alert and watch for school buses, pedestrians, bicyclists, and crossing guards.
🚫 Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and never ride with someone who is.
🚙 Limit distractions by keeping music at a reasonable volume and staying focused on the road.

Parents, you play an important role too. Continue talking with your teen about safe driving habits, practice together, and lead by example every time you're behind the wheel.

Whether you're a new driver or have years of experience, we all share the responsibility of keeping our roads safe.
