🌟 HIPPY REGISTRATION IS OPEN FOR 2026–2027! 🌟

Are you ready to give your child a strong start for kindergarten and beyond? 📚❤️

The Walker County HIPPY Program is now accepting applications for the 2026–2027 program year!

🏠 What is HIPPY?
HIPPY is a FREE early childhood program that brings learning right to your home! Our trained Home Visitors provide families with fun, age-appropriate activities, books, and support to help children build the skills they need to be successful in school.

✨ HIPPY helps families:
📖 Build early reading and language skills
🔢 Develop early math and school-readiness skills
👩‍👧 Strengthen parent-child relationships
🎨 Learn through fun, hands-on activities
📚 Receive books and educational materials
🤝 Connect with other families through group events and activities

💛 Who can participate?
Families with children who are 2, 3, or 4 years old may be eligible to participate.

🏡 The best part?
You don't have to leave your home! A trained HIPPY Home Visitor meets with you each week and shows you how to use the activities with your child. You become your child's first and most important teacher!

HIPPY brings learning right into your home through structured activities, books, and one-on-one instruction that helps prepare your child for school. It's one of our most popular programs, and spots fill up quickly every single year.

Did you know that approximately 1 in every 57 people in Walker County is a grandparent raising a grandchild? While grandparents make up a large portion of kinship caregivers, many children are also being raised by aunts, uncles, older siblings, and other relatives or close family friends when their parents are unable to care for them.

At the Jasper Area Family Services Center, we believe no family should have to navigate that journey alone. We are incredibly grateful for this partnership as we launch our new Kinship Program, expanding support, resources, education, and connections for the caregivers who step up when children need them most.

Kinship caregivers are everyday heroes who provide love, stability, and hope during some of life’s most challenging circumstances. We are honored to walk alongside these families and look forward to strengthening our community by ensuring they have the support they deserve.

Cue the fireworks, fire up the grill, and get ready for what might be the most ambitious birthday cake of all time. 🎂

America turns 250 this year, which means 250 candles on the cake … so someone should probably alert the fire department.

However you’re celebrating the Fourth of July, we hope it’s filled with great food, good company, and a sky full of fireworks.

Our office will be closed on Friday, July 3rd, in observance of the holiday. We’ll be back and ready to help on Monday. Wishing you a safe and happy Fourth!

Happy *belated* birthday to our favorite Interim Executive Director, Taylor Johnson! 🎉💚

Taylor is the one behind the scenes keeping everything running smoothly at JAFSC, and the one who graciously puts up with all of us popping into her office at all hours of the day! We’re so grateful for her leadership, her heart for families, and the positive impact she makes in our community every single day. 💛

A few of Taylor’s Favorites & Fun Facts:
• Favorite birthday treat: A blue raspberry snow cone (yes, really!)
• Favorite color: Green
• Favorite snack: Cherry Jolly Ranchers, especially on a busy day 🍒
• Favorite drink: Root Beer (A&W ONLY!)
• Fun fact: Her post-retirement dream? Flight school! ✈️

Our biggest asset at JAFSC is, and always will be, our staff. 💚

Kim and Makensie shared their kinship care journeys at the ANFRC Statewide Gathering. Because of their lived experience, they are able to connect with participants in a meaningful way, offering understanding, encouragement, and hope to families walking similar paths.

In Alabama, more than 100,000 children live in homes headed by grandparents or other relatives, highlighting the vital role kinship caregivers play in keeping families connected and children supported.

“Kinship care is more than providing a home—it’s preserving family, culture, and a child’s sense of belonging.”

We are grateful for staff members who are willing to share their stories and use their experiences to strengthen families across our community.

We are loving the opportunity to connect with friends and colleagues from across the state at the ANFRC Statewide Gathering!

Today, we explored the importance of using data to tell our story and how to tailor that story to different audiences—from legislators and funders to community partners and families. The numbers matter, but it’s the impact behind them that truly makes a difference.

We can’t wait to see what Day 2 has in store for us!

Fun fact: Did you know Kim has done just about everything? One of her many jobs was working at a bait shop in Arkansas. Needless to say, she felt right at home during our visit to the Maritime Museum today! 🎣🚤
