LOCKDOWN DRILL NOTICE

Jasper Police Department will be conducting scheduled lockdown drills this morning at Jasper High School and T.R. Simmons.

The drills will begin at approximately 8:30 a.m. and are expected to conclude by 10:30 a.m., though they may run slightly longer.

This is a planned drill. There is no emergency or threat to either school.

Interested in joining the Jasper Police Department? Now is the time to apply! The City of Jasper has upcoming testing dates for several positions, including Police Officer, Corrections Officer, and Communications Officer.

POSITIONS & EXAM DATES

• Police Officer — September 29 at 9:00 a.m.
Starting Pay: $46,963.52/year
Applicants must be at least 21 years old.

• Corrections Officer — September 28 at 9:00 a.m.
Starting Pay: $40,496.49/year

• Communications Officer — September 30 at 9:00 a.m.
Starting Pay: $36,687.83/year

What do I need to apply?
Please bring the following with you when submitting your application:

• Current driver's license
• Social Security card
• Birth certificate
• High school diploma or GED
• Three signed letters of recommendation from non-City employees, including a phone number

Applications are available at Jasper City Hall, 3rd Floor, Monday–Friday from 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. You can also download an application through the Civil Service Board section of jaspercity.com.

Congratulations to three members of the Jasper Police Department who were recognized today by Mayor Gates and Chief Poe for their recent promotions!

Jeremiah Alexander has been promoted to the rank of Captain, and Ryan Brewer and Octavious Dockery have been promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Each of these officers has earned the opportunity to take on a greater leadership role within our department through their service, experience, and commitment to the community.

“I’m extremely proud of these men and what they have accomplished,” said Chief J.C. Poe. “They have each proven themselves as leaders, and I’m especially proud that they chose the Jasper Police Department as the place to build their careers. I look forward to seeing them continue to grow and lead our officers in their new roles.”

With school back in session, we're seeing more students, parents, and pedestrians out and about across Jasper, walking to school or their bus. It's a good time for all of us to slow down and pay a little extra attention behind the wheel.

Whether you're driving through a school zone, downtown, a neighborhood, or a busy shopping area:

🚗 Slow down and stay alert especially in areas with heavy foot traffic.
📵 Put the phone down and keep your attention on the road.
🚶 Watch for pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections and be prepared to stop.
🚌 Use extra caution around schools and school buses, where children may enter the roadway unexpectedly.
🌙 Be especially watchful in the early morning and evening hours, when pedestrians can be harder to see.

Pedestrians have a role in safety, too. Use crosswalks when available, avoid distractions while crossing, and make sure drivers can see you before stepping into the roadway.

A few extra seconds of patience and attention can prevent a tragedy.

Sometimes the people who are struggling the most are the ones who have the hardest time asking for help.

The Jasper Police Department wants to remind our community, especially our young people, that you do not have to face a difficult moment alone. Whatever you are dealing with, there are people who want to listen, help, and stand beside you.

We also encourage parents, friends, classmates, teachers, coaches, and others to pay attention to the people around you. Check in. Listen without judgment. Take changes in behavior or talk of hopelessness or su***de seriously. Don't be afraid to ask someone directly if they're struggling.

A conversation may feel uncomfortable, but it could be an incredibly important one.

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911 or seek emergency assistance.

Check on your people. Listen. Speak up. Ask for help.

No one should have to struggle in silence.

📚🚸 BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY 🚸📚

The Jasper Police Department is excited to welcome students, teachers, and staff back for another school year!

As the first days of school begin, our officers will have an increased presence around schools to help ensure students arrive safely and traffic continues to move as smoothly as possible. The first week often brings new routines, unfamiliar traffic patterns, and heavier congestion as everyone gets settled.

Here are a few reminders that can make a big difference:

🚌 School buses: Never pass a stopped school bus when its stop arm is extended and red lights are flashing.

🚸 School zones: Slow down, eliminate distractions, and be prepared for children who may unexpectedly enter the roadway.

🚗 Drop-off & pick-up: Follow the school's designated traffic pattern, avoid double parking, and never stop in crosswalks or block intersections.

📱 Put the phone away: A text or notification can wait. Your full attention belongs on the road, especially in school zones.

⏰ Leave a few minutes early: Giving yourself a little extra time helps reduce stress and keeps traffic flowing safely for everyone.

🚶 Watch for pedestrians: Students may be walking, riding bicycles, or crossing streets before and after school. Always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

The start of a new school year is an exciting time for our community, and every driver plays a role in keeping our children safe. By slowing down, staying alert, and showing a little courtesy to one another, we can help make this school year a safe and successful one for everyone.

The Jasper Police Department extends its congratulations to Davis Getter, stepson of Captain David Mize, on graduating from the 27th Session of the FBI National Academy Associates (FBINAA) Youth Leadership Program in Quantico, Virginia.

The FBINAA Youth Leadership Program brings together exceptional young leaders from across the United States and internationally who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and good citizenship. During the eight-day program, participants take part in leadership development, physical fitness training, and immersive educational experiences designed to prepare them for future service and leadership.

Graduating from this prestigious program is a significant accomplishment, and we are proud to recognize Davis for representing his community with excellence.
