A huge THANK YOU to Sylvie Sparks from WVTM 13 for spending time with our WMIS News Crew and Summer Learning students today!

Sylvie gave our students an inside look at the exciting world of broadcast journalism, sharing what it's like to work as a news anchor, how stories are developed and delivered, and the skills needed to succeed in the industry. She answered questions, shared personal experiences, and inspired our students to think about future careers in media and communications.

Thank you, Sylvie, for providing a real-world connection to the work they are learning about through our school news program. We loved having you at WMIS and appreciate the impact you made on our students!

In February, MIS EL students took the annual WIDA ACCESS assessment that measures their English proficiency in the four areas of communication: listening, speaking, reading and writing. These scores help classroom teachers and the EL department better serve each student based on their proficiency levels in each area of communication. When students score a 4.8 composite score or higher, they are able to exit the EL program.

Mr. Sargent promised our EL students a pizza party for growth on ACCESS and then really upped the growth prize by allowing students who exit the program, to pie him in the face (while wearing a tutu, per a specific student request).

18 Maddox EL students scored 4.8 or higher on ACCESS this year! Congratulations to these students for their hard work!
