This weekend several volunteer firefighters from local VFD’s gave up their weekend to be trained by Rescue Training International in their Lake Rescue Boat Technician 1 course.

This intensive course was hosted by Jasper County Emergency Services District # 4 and held at nearby Lake Sam Rayburn.

The course taught students boat and rescue operational tactics on open water…….something that we have plenty of around here!

The course was challenging, pushing the volunteers to their limits, but very rewarding. Their commitment and perseverance is unmatched.

All of this to be better trained to serve YOU!

Fire departments in general are consistently called to respond to a widening variety of emergencies and are truly all hazards responders.

This training, and dedication by our local volunteers, make this a safer area, protecting and serving our communities. Good job to everyone!

Participating departments are:

Angelina River Fire And Rescue
Jasper Texas Volunteer Fire Department
Lake Rayburn Fire Department
Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Dept
Beech Grove VFD

“Don’t make it complicated, just be nice”.

Chief Alan Brunacini of the Phoenix Fire Department was a wise man whom I had the pleasure of meeting many years ago. He passed away in 2017, but his teachings live on.

You don’t have to be in the fire service to understand how this Chief led his department….most of the time in his non-traditional Hawaiian shirt.

For Chief Brunacini, it was all about community and customer service.

For BGVFD, it’s all about community and customer service.

Why? Because I listened and learned from the best. For it’s not what you do, but rather how you do it.

Do yourself a favor this morning and watch this short video…..sums up a lot.

At 7:01am BGVFD was dispatched to assist Jasper Texas Volunteer Fire Department with a working commercial structure fire at King Lumber on US Highway 96 at the southern city limits of City of Jasper, Jasper Texas.

The facility processes lumber and workers discovered a fire within the dry kiln when arriving for work this morning. The fire had progressed, feeding on large bundles of pine lumber, and had visible flames emitting from multiple openings.

Suppression efforts were initiated but were hampered by lack of a fire hydrant. A tanker shuttle was established utilizing tankers from multiple departments. The fire was controlled in about 6 hours.

All responding departments are volunteer, utilizing volunteer firefighters who were engaged in firefighting efforts for hours in very humid and hot conditions. Constant rehabilitation was a must and frequent breaks were necessary. Allegiance Mobile Health - Jasper EMS remained on scene throughout the event.

It’s estimated that around 150,000 to 200,000 gallons of water was shuttled to the site from nearby fire hydrants. Note that there was a fire hydrant in proximity to the fire scene, however it was located on the opposite side of US Highway 96. Had this hydrant been utilized by a hose lay operation, then US Highway 96 would have been closed, probably for hours.

In addition to Jasper VFD, responding departments were:

Angelina River Fire And Rescue
East End Volunteer Fire Department
Lake Rayburn Fire Department
Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Dept
Roganville Volunteer Fire Department
Kirbyville Volunteer Fire Dept
Buna Texas Volunteer Fire Department
Silsbee VFD
Beech Grove VFD, Jasper TX

No injuries occurred.

It’s been a while……first post about the BGVFD Dixie fire station in some time.

So busy doing many other things, just haven’t had time to work on the building lately. The exterior is predominantly complete, and over the weekend we successfully installed the septic system, under the close guidance of Seth Martindale, and his number one helper Connor, who graciously donated his knowledge, labor, and equipment to get the job done!

One step closer. Thanks Seth!

Despite the strong storms that passed through the area this morning, U.S. Army Corporal Orestus Marion Stewart has reached his final resting place, some 75 plus years after leaving Jasper County as a young soldier who was killed in action in Korea, remaining unidentified for decades.

Led by the Jasper County ESD #4 Honor Guard, the Commander and Vice-Commander of VFW Post 6380 - Jasper, TX, Office of Office of Jasper County Judge Mark Allen, and carried by the Jasper Texas Volunteer Fire Department, Corporal Stewart was laid to rest this afternoon with full military honors in Magnolia Springs in Jasper County.

On behalf of all public safety entities in Jasper County, it has been an honor and privilege to have been involved in the homecoming of Corporal Stewart, from the procession traveling from Houston to Jasper to today’s final journey.

There were so many involved with making this happen but I want to personally recognize Rodney Coleman and his entire staff at Coleman’s Mortuary for their absolute and incredibly dignified involvement with this entire homecoming. 🫡

Thank you to every single one who assisted, planned, and was involved in this ceremony.

Thank you to every proud citizen who showed up to display your appreciation, patriotism, support to the family, but most of all, for your love for the United States of America!

This has been an incredible honor.
