Today, our community became a little safer. Today is the day that two new volunteers completed their live burn in order to become registered volunteer Firefighters with the state. These two incredible people are both retired military and found it in their heart to continue their service on their home turf and in their new community. We would like to say congratulations to these two individuals on their success. We would also like to give a heartfelt thank you to Big Canoe Public Safety for the use of their training facility and to the City of Jasper Fire Department for providing additional instructors to assist with the instruction. Also, a heartfelt thank you goes to our members who assisted with the class to bring in two more volunteers to our community. Together, we make Pickens County and the community of Hinton a great and safe place to live.

Small town USA.

What is it like living in a small town? As Tim Dugger stated in a music video, “A lot of red, white, and blue, that’s the heart of a small town.”

On the evening of July 30th, severe storms ripped through Pickens County. In this photo taken by Bill Coogle and reported by 11 Alive news, you see a large tree and several people.

This photo is the definition of the “heart of a small town” and a community coming together in the face of adversity to achieve a common goal. This incident happened in the area of Highway 53 West and Arrowhead Way between the Hinton Community and the Jerusalem Community. This very large oak tree took approximately 2 hours to remove and to clear the road. People from all walks of life came out to help. This incident was mitigated by a collaborative effort between the Georgia DOT, Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, Pickens County Fire, Hinton Volunteer Fire, and many citizens who were in the area or just passing through. We would like to take this time to extend our sincerest heartfelt appreciation to each and every individual who came together that night to achieve a common goal. In the famous words of Montgomery Gentry, “This is My Town.”

Why are there a couple of fire trucks outside of my house or business this morning? Is something on fire?

Not at all. This morning, your Hinton volunteers were out early finishing up hydrant flow testing.

Well why are y’all out doing that?

Here is an explanation.

ISO or Insurance Services Office visits each fire department nationally usually on a 4 year schedule. This is done whether you are a career or volunteer agency. The ISO auditor’s job is to inspect and audit each department and to issue a rating from 1-10 with 1 being the best and 10 being the worst in aspect of firefighting services. There are several factors that affect this rating with one of the main factors being fire hydrant accessibility and water supply. The auditor will pick out a number and series of hydrants located within the vicinity of certain commercial and residential occupancies in each fire department’s district. These hydrants then have to be flow tested to obtain a series of 3 numbers. A static pressure, a flow pressure, and a residual pressure. This test is completed by utilizing two fire hydrants at once. One at the test location and one down line. These numbers are then recorded and passed on to the auditor during his or her visit.

Well how does this affect me as a home owner or business owner?

As mentioned above, ISO assesses a department’s capabilities and scores that agency on several factors. Once the score is calculated based on the assessment, that score is then used by your insurance company to calculate your homeowner’s or commercial premium for your insurance. We along with the members of Pickens County Fire strive to provide the best services to you as possible and strive to make sure you have an accurate and fair assessment for your homeowner’s or commercial premium.

In the future, if you see any of our apparatus out and about testing or maintaining hydrants, please give them space on the roadway to work and a friendly wave as they’re out there working to help you as citizens and visitors of their protection district.

Your Hinton volunteer firefighters are out today performing hydrant maintenance. We will be out in the areas of Big Ridge, Damascus, and Carver Mill. If you see them out and about, give them a wave and plenty of space to work. You will notice a new white letter “H” painted on the roadway. This is a new marking system we are utilizing to help locate hydrants both during the day and at night in a timely manner. The “H” is painted facing the hydrant and is on the same side of the road that the hydrant is on. Hydrant maintenance is a process that helps firefighters to ensure each hydrant is operational before an event such as a house fire occurs. This is a yearly process to help ensure the safety and well being of the citizens. This process also helps our fire department keep your insurance ratings lower.

Severe weather:

This evening around 4:30, Pickens County and surrounding counties and jurisdictions experienced wide spread storm damage. Unconfirmed reports of a possible tornado touchdown was received by Pickens County E911 in the West End of Pickens County.

Crews from Hinton VFD, Pickens County Fire, and all other fire and law enforcement agencies deployed across Pickens County to respond to, assess, and mitigate any hazard or emergency scene that was located. This was a coordinated and collaborative response between all agencies throughout Pickens County. We are thankful for God’s hedge of protection for our team members throughout Pickens County as they responded to multiple calls regarding a vast array of emergency situations. There are multiple trees and power lines down county wide. We ask for your patience toward our first responders and utility workers as we work together to mitigate the damage caused by these storms.

Tonight our members trained on RIT (rapid intervention) scenarios where a down firefighter initiates a mayday, a team goes in and locates the down firefighter and packages them for removal from the IDLH (Immediate dangerous to life health) environment. We also trained on thermal imaging techniques. Class was taught by HVFD Sgt. Edwards and Pickens Fire Lt. Elder.

As today is Thanksgiving, let us all remember what and who we have in our lives that we are thankful for. But also, let us remember that there are kids in our communities that are not as fortunate as most of us are. Hinton VFD is a designated drop off location for Toys for Tots this holiday season. If you feel led to drop off a toy, please do so by walking into the station and the drop box is right inside the front door. We hope you and your families have a safe and prosperous Thanksgiving and Christmas. May god protect and bless each of you.

It is with great sadness that I report that Firefighter Rocky McDowell lost his battle with cancer this morning. Rocky selflessly served with the Hinton Volunteer Fire Department and on the Pickens County Fire search and rescue team. Rocky responded to an array of calls throughout his short time with the agency including a multi agency multi day search for a missing man in Pickens County. Our hearts are broken at the loss of such an incredible man, friend husband, father, grandfather, and son. Rocky you answered your final call here on earth. 618 is clear. Thank you for your service to the citizens of the Hinton Community and Pickens County.
