Summer officially begins tomorrow, June 21st, and there is nothing like an Alabama summer!

Our state is filled with beautiful landscapes, fascinating wildlife, and the nicest people anywhere. Whatever your plans may be for the summer, there are so many things you can do right in your own backyard. From visiting a local farmers market and starting a container garden to spotting pollinators and attending an Extension event, there are plenty of ways to learn, explore, and enjoy everything that Alabama has to offer.

The honey bees are ALL over the Mountain Mint!

Pollinators, such as insects, birds and bats, play a big role in our food system. Through pollinating plants and crops, they are responsible for one out of every three bites of food people eat. National Pollinator Week, which runs June 22 to 28, aims to highlight these important creatures while encouraging people to learn how to help and protect their populations.

It's time to watch out for Japanese Beetles!

These metallic green-and-copper pests can feed on more than 400 species of broad-leaved plants, damaging leaves, flowers, and overripe fruit. While adults typically emerge in late May to early June, their activity is most intense during a 4- to 6-week period beginning in late June.

If you spot Japanese beetles, act early. During the first few days of emergence, handpick them or knock them into a bucket of soapy water in the early morning when they are less active.

Remember, both the adult beetles and their grubs can cause damage to your landscape and garden.
