JHFD Responds to Kimball Fire Mutual Aid Call

This morning at 5:18 am, we responded to a mutual aid call from the Kimball Fire Department for a tractor trailer fire on the east bound I-24 exit ramp. Engine Three, Brush Truck One and our command vehicle responded with five firefighters. With Engine Three being a tanker with 2500 gallons of water, we refilled Kimball's engine and assisted with the extinguishment of the trailer fire. The tractor had disconnected from the burning trailer, with the trailer being a total loss. Everyone cleared the scene at 7:05 am and returned safely to Station One.

JHFD Responds to Residential Fire on Victory Way

Last night at 8:49 pm, the JHFD responded to a report of a "fully engulfed" residential house fire on Victory Way off of Crockett Pointe in the back of the Jasper Farms neighborhood of Jasper Highlands. With the initial report of a fully engulfed, unoccupied home, immediate mutual aid was requested from Jasper Fire Department, Jasper, TN and Kimball Fire Department. Upon arrival, the report was confirmed and the home had already burned to the point it had fallen in on itself, but was still threatening the detached garage. Initial efforts focused on protecting the detached garage from further damage and preventing fire spread into the adjacent forest. During firefighting operations, two of our members experienced heat related exertion medical issues, with one recovering on scene and rejoining the operation, while the second was sent to the hospital for further evaluation. This firefighter has since returned home and is ok this morning. We finished the extinguishment and remained on scene dousing hot spots until about 1:30 am when everyone cleared the scene and returned home safely. We want to thank both Jasper and Kimball Fire Departments for their help last night. It is truly appreciated.

A couple of additional comments on this fire. This house was remote to other homes and sat at the end of a cul-de-sac with no other homes nearby on Victory Way or Crockett Pointe. As such, and being unoccupied at the time, it had been burning for a significant amount of time before a 911 call was made. Secondly, the initial report of this fire was a direct call to one of our firefighters, not to the 911 Marion County dispatch center. We've stressed this repeatedly and will do so again here. If you see a fire, CALL 911. Do not call our firefighters directly. The 911 call alerts the entire department simultaneously via apps on our phones, triggering the full emergency response. Calling our firefighters directly wastes time and delays that response. Do not hesitate to call 911!

Training Day!

This week's training rotation was on proper size up and extinguishment of vehicle fires. This morning's exercise was held at the Station Two parking lot with the team responding from Station One. Engines Two and Three responded, with the Engine Two team leading the extinguishment, with Engine Three serving as a water supply tanker to Engine Two. The scenario covered not only the car fire, but the discovery of a victim still in the car. After successfully completing the initial scenario, we moved on to training on using two different firefighting foams. The simplest, believe it or not, simply uses Dawn dish soap, as seen in the yellow jug one of the photos. All in all, a good morning of training reinforcing a number of skills needed for an effective response.

Dale Davis nominated as JHFD Rookie of the Year

We recently recognized Dale Davis as a Rookie Firefighter of the Year nominee. Dale has jumped right in and has quickly become an important member of our team. In addition to our regular training, Dale sought out and took an external course on fire engine and pump operations. He also brings significant mechanical skills which helps us keep our engines in excellent condition. Congratulations Dale, and thanks for all you do for our department!

Training Day, Saturday, August 1st - Medical Helicopter Landing Zones

Saturday morning starting at 8:00 am we will be conducting training at Station One and on the field between Jasper Highlands Boulevard and the Gazebodacious. This training will be held in conjunction with Erlanger's Life Force team, with the intent being to learn first responder best practices in emergency medical helicopter operations, safety, communications, landing zone selection and management. There is a possibility, if weather conditions and their operational tempo allow, that there may be an Erlanger Life Force helicopter landing there at some point during the morning's training.
