Java Volunteer Fire Department

Java Volunteer Fire Department Java South Dakota Volunteer Fire Department Founded in 1905 by 6 members on Hose Co 1 and 3 members on Engine Co 1. In 1957 another truck was purchased.

In 1916 4 new members added to the Hook and Ladder Co 1. In June of 1922 4 new members were added to the Chemical Engine Co 1.This hand drawn cart we still have today. In 1936 the firemen put on a play "Colored Minstrel" at the high school in Java. From 1938 to 1995 the Java fire department and the Mobridge fire departments held a annual fish fry. In 1939 10 new members were added along with a Mod

el B truck which was converted to a fire truck from a milk truck by the local firemen. The Chemical tank was mounted to this truck giving Java a truck second to none. Phone line were installed in 1977 and 2 CB radios were installed into the trucks in 1978. The local firemen attend yearly training along with training monthly. The department has a long history of fundraisers and in 1974 started a annual steak fry for their firemen. Currently the Java Fire Department has 4 trucks one being just recently received bought threw grants and fundraisers. We have 2 attack trucks 1 holding 300 gallons, and the new 1 holding 400 gallons and also foam. We have a "mop up" truck holding 200 gallons and a structure/tanker holding 3000 gallons. We currently have 20 fire personnel on the roster. There has been 17 fire chiefs threw the 110 year history with the current one being Dewight Helm
