Think about the last time you were at a Missouri state park.

Maybe it was a Sunday hike at Ha Ha Tonka. A trout stream at Bennett Spring. A summer swim at Echo Bluff. A picnic at Rock Bridge. Your kid’s first hike anywhere. A wedding at Watkins Woolen Mill. Your family reunion pavilion at Roaring River. A morning walk on the Katy Trail.

You walked in for free. So did everyone else. That’s not by accident. That’s Amendment 1, the one-tenth of one percent state sales tax Missourians have voted YES on five times since 1984 to keep our 93 state parks and historic sites free, open, and welcoming to every Missourian.

Missouri is one of only eight states in the country that lets every visitor walk into every state park without paying a dime. That’s a Missouri decision. And it’s on the ballot Tuesday.

That's how long the Conservation Federation of Missouri and the National Wildlife Federation spent sharing the definitive case for Amendment 1 and it's how long we're asking every Missourian to spend watching this video before Tuesday's vote.

When The Nature Conservancy runs statewide voter education on a Missouri ballot measure, Missourians should pay attention.

TNC is running an educational campaign to make sure every Missouri voter knows what's on the August 4th ballot: Amendment 1 is the renewal of the Parks, Soils and Water Sales Tax that has funded conservation practices and free state parks since 1984.

As a 501(c)(3), TNC can't tell voters how to vote. They can tell voters what the amendment does. And what it does is exactly what TNC has spent decades in Missouri championing.

The campaign advocates. TNC educates. Both matter.

Missouri voters will see Amendment 1 on the Aug. 4 ballot. The measure asks whether to continue the existing Parks, Soils and Water Sales Tax for another 10 years. This is a renewal of an existing tax, not a new tax.

– provide financial incentives for soil and water conservation practices
– prevent soil erosion
– operate, maintain and improve state parks and historic sites

This park matters.

The stone walls of the Ha Ha Tonka castle still stand on a Camden County bluff, the ruins of a European-style mansion built in 1905 by a Kansas City businessman who fell in love with the springs and hills of the Ozarks. It burned in 1942. The walls stayed.

Below the ruins, one of the largest springs in Missouri pushes 58 million gallons of water into the Lake of the Ozarks every day. Fifteen miles of trails wind through some of the most spectacular limestone glades and sinkhole country in the state.

Missouri families walk that ground today. Boy Scouts camp there. High school seniors take their prom photos in the ruins. Anglers work the coves below the bluffs. Fifty years of Missourians have made memories in a place that the state park system chose to preserve rather than let go.

That soybean field was planted by a Missouri farmer who probably had the same field planted by their father, and their father before them.

Missouri farmland stays productive across generations because of one simple thing: the topsoil doesn't wash off. That doesn't happen by accident. It happens because for 42 years, Amendment 1 has cost-shared the conservation practices cover crops, contour terraces, grass waterways, livestock ponds that keep Missouri farmland working for the next generation.

288,000 conservation practices. 8 million acres impacted. Every one of Missouri's 114 counties involved through locally elected Soil & Water Conservation Districts.

That's the deal Missouri has been keeping with Missouri farmers since 1984.
