Mark your calendars!!

It's the meal that some people wait for all year. It's the food that makes some people start drooling as soon as they walk in the door... and others as soon as they see the signs. It's the food...the smells...the excitement...that you just don't want to miss.

On Friday, September 25 from 4:00-7:00pm Central Church will be hosting its Annual Oktoberfest German Dinner. Grilled sausage, our amazing German potato salad, fried apples, sauerkraut, green beans, and pie -- lots of pie -- for $17. If you prefer a kid's meal, we'll have hot dogs, chips, green beans, and dessert for $7. Kids 5 & under eat free.

There will once again be both dine-in and drive-thru options available this year (& carryouts are also available for dine-in guests to take an extra meal to go). Please follow the signs on the day of the event to get where you need to go for the correct option.

All of the profits from this year's dinner will again be donated to Jefferson City Room at the Inn. Room at the Inn is an emergency, low-barrier overnight homeless shelter that operates during the winter months. They provide a hot meal and a warm place to sleep on cold nights for individuals with nowhere else to go.

Central Church is located at 118 W. Ashley St. in Jefferson City, 2 blocks south of US50 between Broadway and Jefferson St. (Just look for our steeple.)

And, if you're looking for a church home, feel free to speak with any of our members. They'll be more than happy to explain why this church feels like Home to them and why these people feel like Family. No matter where you are on your faith journey, you are welcome here.

Our normal Sunday Schedule will resume on Sept. 13. For the summer, we are only having a 10:15am combined service (no 9:00am service)

A little bit ago, HCJC asked the City for a continuance on our zoning request for 107 Adams Street. Based on the agenda for Monday night's council meeting, it has been granted. You can have your Monday evening back! Depending on how the next couple of months unfold, we're now looking at early October before we go to the city council.

While we still think that 107 Adams Street is the ideal location for a resource center and our expanded shelter, we look forward to working with the City to find a mutually agreeable location where we can serve our friends and neighbors in need. In the meantime, we appreciate you continuing to contact city officials in support of our project. Your Letters to the Editor have been great and noticed by city officials. Keep it up!

Thank you to these two for again volunteering their time to engage with the community and share our plans for hope and help.

I am sharing this message from last week’s guest presenters because helping those experiencing homelessness—through transitional housing, access to healthcare, emergency shelter, and supportive resources—strengthens the foundation of a stable community. It also aligns with Rotary International’s commitment to building peace through service. Service Above Self.

Last Wednesday, our club welcomed Sara Hamilton of Room at the Inn and Scott Johnson, President of Housing the Community JC (HCJC). They shared how their organizations are making a difference through initiatives including Jefferson City Room at the Inn, Project Homeless Connect, Open Doors, and Transitional Housing.

Their most urgent priority is the proposed Resource Center and Emergency Shelter at 107 Adams Street. While some have expressed concerns that the facility could attract more people experiencing homelessness, increase crime, or discourage downtown investment, research and experience tell a different story.

The vast majority of people experiencing homelessness remain in the communities where they have family, employment history, healthcare providers, schools, or other support networks. Studies have also found that professionally managed emergency shelters do not result in a statistically significant increase in neighborhood crime. In many cases, they reduce the impacts of unsheltered homelessness by providing a safe, supervised environment while connecting individuals with housing, healthcare, employment assistance, and other essential services.

Strong communities respond to difficult challenges with compassion, collaboration, and evidence-based solutions. By supporting Housing the Community JC and the proposed Resource Center, we can help build a Jefferson City where fewer people are forced to sleep in parks, parking lots, and doorways—and where more individuals have the opportunity to regain stability, dignity, and hope.

Together, we can make a lasting difference—one person, one family, and one act of service at a time.
