Last night, members of the Cole County Fire Protection District Cadets program, with assistance from a few Cole County Fire Protection District firefighters, attended a training focused on SCBAโ€™s (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) and Structural Search and Rescue.

Topics included:
-Learning and identifying all components of the SCBA
-Proper inspection of the SCBA
-Proper donning and doffing of the SCBA
-General concepts of a structural search and rescue
-Introduction to and physical application of Thermal Imaging devices
-Physical application of the search and rescue concepts
-Physical recovery of โ€œdummyโ€ and live victims

These skills are essential when circumstances dictate that they are needed on the fire scene. Last night was the introductory phase of these training topics and the Cadets will continue to build and learn more advanced procedures in the future. The primary hope is that the Cadets will become confident and proficient in applying these skills when they are needed most.

Interested in getting involved? Our Cadet Program is a great opportunity for those ages 14-17 to learn about the fire service, build essential skills, and serve alongside experienced firefighters. Visit our website at www.ccfpd.net for more information.

This week, the Cole County Fire Protection District (CCFPD) began performing their annual hose testing starting with both engines from Station 2 and the engine from Station 4. Hose testing is an annual requirement per NFPA standard 1962, which ensures hose safety and performance by conducting hydrostatic tests to check for leaks, damage, and coupling failures. Hoses are tested at 250 psi for 5 minutes. Every hose on the truck has to be laid out in 300 feet sections, filled with water, then pressurized. Each truck takes about 1.5-2 hours to test. This includes unloading the hoses, filling, checking connections, pressurizing, draining, and reloading the hoses back onto the truck.

Hose testings take place at various locations in the county. For this testing, CCFPD would like to thank Three Rivers Electric Cooperative in Brazito for allowing the crews to use their concrete area.
