According to the story passed down with them, these antique folding chairs date to the Civil War era. Chairs like these could be folded, loaded into a wagon, and carried from one encampment to another—ready to be unfolded wherever the next meeting took place.

But who sat in these particular chairs?

Was it a general? An officer? A messenger who had just ridden in from the front? Or perhaps a tired soldier who sat down for a few quiet moments to write a letter to the sweetheart waiting for him at home?

What orders were given? What plans were made? What conversations took place around a table much like this one?

We don’t know.

So, for this one, we’re going to leave a little room for imagination.

If these chairs could tell one story from the war, what would it be?

Give us your best fictional tale—a secret meeting, a decision that changed everything, a love letter written far from home, or simply an ordinary evening in an extraordinary time.

We’ll leave the facts to the historians and the storytelling to you. 😉

There are certain days when you can feel the season beginning to turn.

The summer light is still warm, the trees are still green, but every now and then a breeze carries the faintest hint of autumn.

Glenmore is enjoying these last golden weeks of summer — and looking forward to all that the coming season will bring. There are a few new traditions taking shape here this fall, and we can’t wait to share them with you. 🍂

For now, though… we’ll simply enjoy the breeze.

Since 1868, the Glenmore has watched the seasons change, storms roll through, and generations come and go. The world around her has changed considerably—but she hasn’t moved an inch.

A little work behind the scenes can make a big difference. 💚

We’re happy to share that Glenmore does have designated accessible parking, and our lower-level entrance can be reached by ramp. Guests with limited mobility are always welcome to visit and enjoy as much of Glenmore as they are comfortably able to experience.

Because Glenmore is a historic three-story home, we do want our visitors to know that there is no elevator to the upper floors. We believe it is helpful to share that information ahead of time so every guest can plan their visit with confidence.

And speaking of making Glenmore more welcoming, we’re especially grateful for one of our newest volunteers — a student at Carson-Newman University — who spent part of her day helping us freshen up our accessible parking area. We are so thankful to have the energy, enthusiasm, and helping hands of a new generation joining the Glenmore family. 💚

Why did Glenmore put WINDOWS where DOORS should be?

In England, a tax on windows and doors once influenced the way houses were designed. So it’s intriguing to find these enormous windows in Glenmore’s upstairs parlor—windows that open onto the balcony almost like doors.

Could Tennessee have had a similar form of taxation? 🤔

We don’t know for certain, but it’s an interesting question to ponder when you see these unusual windows in person.

Imagine arriving at Glenmore in the 1870s. Your carriage pulls up, the horses come to a stop, and you step down onto one of these large stones at the end of the walk.

They’re carriage stones—essentially the 19th-century version of a step stool, helping passengers get safely in and out of their carriage.

Today, they sit quietly at the end of Glenmore’s walkway—a little reminder that once upon a time, arriving at the front door looked very different indeed.

This curious object found its way into our care, eight feet of embroidered silk, ending in a hand-worn handle at one end and a curious metal fitting at the other. We confess we cannot claim it for Glenmore’s own history; its origins lie in a home built for a life this house never quite led. And yet here it hangs, a fine and mysterious thing.

(A spoiler awaits at the very end of this caption — so if you’d care to guess first, we’d be delighted to hear your theory in comments.)

Objects such as these were once a quiet fixture of grand households, tucked into bedrooms and sitting rooms, doing their small, essential work largely unseen. Ours was donated some time ago, and though it did not begin its life in this house, we thought it deserving of a home, and of being properly understood.

Should you wish to see it in person, and take in the rest of the house besides, we welcome visitors.
