Leadership
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve is a Department of Defense office that will develop and promote a culture in which all American employers support and value the military service of their employees with ESGR as the principal advocate within DoD. The nation's Reserve components (total Guard and Reserve forces from all branches of the military) comprise approximately 48 percent of our total available military manpower. The current National Defense Strategy indicates that the Guard and Reserve will be full partners in the fully integrated Total Force. Organization
Today, approximately 4,800 volunteers, ranging from business executives, senior government representatives, educators and military personnel, serve on ESGR State Committees located in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam-CNMI, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. With help and resources from the National ESGR Headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, the 54 ESGR State Committees conduct employer support programs, including informational briefings, mediation and recognition of employers whose policies support or encourage participation in the National Guard and Reserve. By explaining the missions of the National Guard and Reserve and by increasing public awareness of the role of the employer, ESGR works to develop a dialogue among employers, the ESGR State Committees, and local National Guard and Reserve unit commanders and service members. ESGR is the lead advocate within the Department of Defense for Reserve Component employers. Despite the tremendous strides gained by ESGR, an enormous task remains. Census Bureau estimates the total employer population of the U.S. at 7.4 million. The estimated number of employers who employ members of the Guard and Reserve is 125,000. The estimated number of individual workplaces where Guardsmen and Reservists work is approximately 235,000. These numbers are in a constant state of flux due to Guard and Reserve recruitment, labor mobility and a dynamic business environment. The task for ESGR is to work through a nationwide network of volunteers and a small, full-time support staff to inform and educate hundreds of thousands of Reserve Component members and their employers regarding their rights and responsibilities, best practices, and to develop and maintain relationships with employers.

Honoring Those Who Support Our Service Members 🇺🇸

St. Louis MO - Missouri Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an office of the Department of Defense, proudly recognized Jefferson County Parks and Recreation with the prestigious Patriot Award for extraordinary support of employees and family members serving in the National Guard and Reserve.

The award presentation ceremony was held May 27, 2026, during the monthly training meeting at the Jefferson County Administration Annex in Hillsboro, Missouri. COL (Ret.) Ed Gruetzemacher, Missouri ESGR Area 1 Chair, presented the award and spoke about the vital importance of employers who stand behind America’s Citizen Warriors by providing meaningful careers, flexibility, and unwavering support during military service obligations.

Mr. Ryan Quirk was nominated for the Patriot Award by SGT Justin Kahlo of the Missouri National Guard’s 3175th Chemical Company, stationed in Bridgeton, Missouri. SGT Kahlo requested the award be presented formally in the presence of coworkers and supervisors to recognize the tremendous support shown throughout his military service.

In addition to Mr. Quirk receiving the Patriot Award, Mr. Timothy Pigg was presented a Certificate of Support signed by the Secretary of Defense in appreciation for his continued commitment to our Guard and Reserve service members.

Employers like these help keep the spirit of service alive on the home front. Their support strengthens families, communities, and our nation.

Missouri ESGR proudly congratulates one of our own, Jeanne Savell, on a well-deserved recognition this week for her tireless advocacy and service by the Women of Achievement St. Louis. Jeanne also received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Chair of the Missouri ESGR for her dedicated support of veterans, service members, and military families.

Jeanne exemplifies the very heart of ESGR’s mission — strengthening the bridge between civilian communities, employers, and those who wear the uniform of our nation. Her compassion, leadership, and servant spirit continue to create lasting impact across Missouri and beyond.

From organizing platforms and opportunities for brain tumor research to support in championing resources for veterans and their families.

Jeanne’s work reminds us that service does not end when the uniform comes off. It lives on in communities strengthened by dedicated Americans willing to stand in the gap for others.

Please join Missouri ESGR in celebrating Jeanne Savell and thanking her for her unwavering commitment to those who have served our great nation.
