Students may not be in a courtroom, but courts still affect the communities where they live, learn and grow.

Courts help apply the law, protect legal rights and resolve disputes through a public process.

Understanding that process is part of understanding citizenship.

Moot Court helps students practice skills they will need in court.

They learn how to build an argument.
How to listen carefully.
How to respond under pressure.
How to consider more than one side of an issue.

The Supreme Court of Missouri hosts mock trial to help Missouri law students learn these skills and prepare for their law career.

⚖️ Legal term of the week: Exigent

The “exigent circumstances” rule allows a police officer to enter or search without a warrant when there is an emergency that requires quick action.

If a police officer hears someone yelling for help, they don't have to get a warrant to enter the building because the situation requires them to act quickly.

⚖️ Legal term of the week: Allegation

An allegation is a claim made by someone in a legal case that explains what they say is true and what they plan to prove in court.

In a lawsuit, a person may claim that their neighbor built a fence on their property.

This is an allegation because they are stating what they believe happened and what they plan to prove in court.
