Courtrooms have rules that help proceedings remain orderly, respectful and fair.

You may be asked to silence your phone, remain quiet while court is in session and follow instructions from the judge, bailiff or court staff.

Several cases may be scheduled during the same period, so you may need to wait until your case is called.

Each courthouse may have its own procedures. Checking instructions before your visit can help you know what to expect.

Circuit clerks and their staff maintain court records, process filings, collect certain court fees and help the public access information about court cases.

They can explain court procedures and help you locate forms or records.

What they cannot do is give legal advice, recommend what you should file or predict what a judge will decide.
