Legislation that I developed to advance research concerning rare pediatric diseases was truly agreed to and passed last week as part of HB 2372, and is headed to the Governor's desk for his signature.
When my family was faced this time last year with the reality of our granddaughter June being diagnosed with a rare brain cancer, I learned that there are countless Missouri families who are dealing with the same ordeal. Therefore, it became my mission to create an official task force that would target pediatric diseases. The members of this force will include:

- The Director of the Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development
- The Director of the Department of Health and Senior Services
- Two members of the Missouri Senate
- Two members of the House of Representatives
- Two members representing public universities and who have expertise in pediatric diseases, including a representative of the University of Missouri
- Two members representing the private research industry
- One member representing a collaborating nonprofit or industry partner
- One member representing a patient advocacy group

Starting in 2027, this team will meet at least quarterly, researching genetic or pediatric disease initiatives, key outcomes achieved by these initiatives, funds expended and leveraged by these initiatives, and any legislative recommendations.

It is my hope and prayer that the creation of this task force will open doors and pave the way for a future where children and their families will not have to face the suffering caused by such diseases.

A few minutes before the mandated 6pm deadline last Friday, May 15, the Missouri House of Representatives tossed their legislative paperwork into the air to celebrate the conclusion of the 2026 session after advancing a broad range of priorities shaped by the needs of Missourians across the state. A total of 100 bills were passed and ready to be sent to the Governor’s desk for his signature—a number that hadn’t been reached since the 2018 legislative session. Throughout the session, lawmakers focused on practical governing—addressing issues raised by constituents, local officials, employers, educators, law enforcement, and community stakeholders while updating laws and systems that affect Missourians’ everyday lives.
The result was a session centered on core government responsibilities: passing a balanced budget, advancing long-term tax reform, strengthening public safety tools, modernizing state operations, and improving economic competitiveness across Missouri.

One of the 100 bills that was truly agreed to and finally passed during the 71 days that the House convened was HB 2576. As a result, once the Governor signs the bill, the first full week of September will be observed every year throughout Missouri as “June’s Week”.
I created “June’s Week” to inspire Missourians to participate in appropriate events and activities that will raise public awareness of rare pediatric diseases, encourage early recognition of symptoms, and honor our state’s children and families affected by these diseases.
As many of you know, my six-year-old granddaughter June was diagnosed with ATRT-B (atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor) last May. The large growth was carefully removed from her brain, followed by months of intense medical treatments, including four rounds of chemotherapy. During this time, our family met and bonded with several families who were facing the same crises as us. As the weeks passed, I became more convinced that it was my responsibility to be a voice at the Capitol for these families, including my own.
My family and I were overwhelmed with the total support that both the House and the Senate offered to make “June’s Week” a reality.

It was my honor this morning to make a couple of announcements to my fellow representatives on the House floor. First, I let everyone know that after a year of fighting courageously against a rare pediatric disease, my granddaughter June miraculously received a diagnosis of all clear after her first full-body scan last Thursday. My family and I are grateful for all the prayers, words of encouragement, and support that everyone has offered during these difficult times.

Second, I presented an official House resolution to my intern Aaron Glenn, who will be wrapping up his service to me this Thursday. Fortunately, he has agreed to return during next January's legislative session to once again be the perfect "right hand" that every elected official dreams of.

In the photo, Aaron proudly displayed his House resolution while I held the American and Missouri flags that were flown over the Capitol on his birthday this past Sunday. On the table are the two documents signed by the Governor that verify this honor.

Thank you to Representative Terri Violet for endorsing my HB 2740 legislation (created to establish a pediatric disease task force within the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development) in her weekly Capitol Report. As she stated, "I also voted yes on HB 2740, establishing a Pediatric Disease Task Force, including Lawmakers and individuals from across the Medical & Research communities, who will focus on efforts, funding, and outcomes, and make policy recommendations to the General Assembly. I want to thank Rep. Mike Steinmeyer for bringing this legislation forward."

Representative Violet, your support is greatly appreciated.
