We can see ‘tipback’ in corn when kernels do not fill out all of the way into the tip of the ear. This usually is a result of two reasons, 1) poor pollination and/or 2) kernel abortion due to stress.
Kernel formation or the lack of it is an indicator of the time that stress occurred. If a portion of the cob is empty with no evidence of fertilized, viable kernels, the stress occurred at or before pollination. If a portion of the cob shows either very small kernels or kernel dieback, the stress occurred sometime during the grain-filling process. If tip kernels did not abort but their test weight is minimal, the stress occurred in the late part of grain fill.
Stressors that can cause tip back include ⬇️
- Heat and the lack of adequate water during pollination - speeds up pollen shed and slows down silk emergence at the ear tip.
- Excessively warm night time temperatures - forces the plant to burn vital sugars it’s produced instead of sending them to the kernels
- Consecutive cloudy days during grain fill - reduces photosynthesis activity
Depending on the severity of the stress during grain fill, tipback will continue until the point the corn plant has the ability to supply adequate water and nutrients to support growth of the remaining kernels. Having mild temperatures, lots of sunlight, sufficient soil moisture, and nutrient availability is crucial for a successful grain fill period 🌽
