Jefferson County Wisconsin Health Department

Jefferson County Wisconsin Health Department Our mission is to promote the health, safety, and well-being of all people in Jefferson County. We also promote wellness by encouraging healthy behaviors.

Public health promotes and protects the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play. While a doctor treats people who are sick, those of us working in public health try to prevent people from getting sick or injured in the first place. From conducting scientific research to educating about health, people in the field of public health work to assure the conditions in

which people can be healthy. That can mean vaccinating children and adults to prevent the spread of disease. Or educating people about the risks of alcohol and to***co. Public health sets safety standards to protect workers and develops school nutrition programs to ensure kids have access to healthy food. Public health works to track disease outbreaks, prevent injuries and shed light on why some of us are more likely to suffer from poor health than others. The many facets of public health include speaking out for laws that promote smoke-free indoor air and seatbelts, spreading the word about ways to stay healthy and giving science-based solutions to problems.

In conjunction with the Dodge-Jefferson Healthier Community Partnership, we've released the 2025 Community Health Assessment (CHA). This assessment provides a broad look at the health and well-being of Jefferson and Dodge Counties.

The CHA gathers local health data, community voices, and the expertise of regional partners to better understand current needs, identify opportunities, and guide shared action.

Our 2025 assessment identifies mental health and well-being as the Countyโ€™s most urgent health priority and recognizes that improving mental health requires treatment as well as preventative action that strengthens the conditions people need to thrive.

โ€œHealth is shaped by the places people live, work, learn, and gather,โ€ said Elizabeth McGeary, Jefferson County Health Department Director. โ€œBy focusing on belonging, basic needs, housing, and meaningful work, we are addressing the key drivers of health and creating the conditions for residents to thrive.โ€
