Summer is definitely here! Help reduce heat stress on your trees with a thick layer of mulch. Starting six inches from the trunk, spread at least two inches of leaves or other organic matter out to where tree branches end. For more on summer tree care, visit https://www.arborday.org/perspectives/top-tree-watering-tips-summer.

The Jefferson Tree Council next meets at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at the Jefferson Station Community Room, 1000 Washington Street (next to the Jefferson Public Library). Among the likely topics: next year's Foliage Fest location, new markers for the city’s Heritage and Memorial trees, tree loss and replacement, and the challenge of invasive species along the Curry Creek Trail corridor. The public is welcome to attend!

The bright pink redbud flowers blooming now in North Georgia add welcome color to our landscape. They also are an indispensable food source in early spring for animal pollinators. That's important, because according to one estimate about a third of all of the food we eat relies on such pollinators!

The bee in this photo was just one of dozens flying hungrily around a young redbud in Curry Creek Park this past week. When the tree is full grown, it will support many more pollinators, besides being an awesome sight in the spring!

You can learn more about - and maybe purchase - native species such as the Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) at the rescheduled Foliage Fest on Saturday March 29, from 10 a m. - 4:00 p m. The rescheduled festival will be held in the field at 65 Gordon Street. There’ll be food, plants and local crafts for sale, free music and children's activities, too!

🚨 Foliage Festival on March 15 Canceled Due to Weather Concerns 🚨

The Foliage Fest 5K is not canceled

To our community and festival-goers:

Due to the predicted severe weather conditions, including dangerous winds and wet grounds near pine trees, we've made the tough call to cancel the Foliage Festival set for this Saturday. 🌬️🌳

Your safety is our top priority, and we're just as disappointed as you are.

Thank you for your understanding. Stay safe and we hope to gather with you all soon!

The weather at the Jefferson Foliage Fest has its ups and downs - you can hear the wind in this video from 2013 - but the festival is always fun! This year features live bluegrass, old-time, Americana and acappella pop. (Maybe some Celtic tunes, too!) Bring an instrument and join Mark Garrison and others at the jam session around 3:30 pm., or just enjoy a great day outdoors among our many vendors. There are kids' activities and tree experts will be there, too, ready to answer your tree care questions! This free event happens Saturday, March 15 from 10:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at Jefferson City Park, 302 Longview Drive, at the intersection of Lynn Avenue and Memorial Drive.

Some fast picking on a windy day - Jefferson, Georgia, March 16, 2013.
