🐍 Medical Monday: Snake Season in Georgia: Know What to Do if You’re Bitten 🚑

As temperatures rise, snakes become more active throughout Jackson County and across Georgia. While most snakes are harmless and play an important role in our ecosystem, it’s important to know which species can be dangerous and what to do if a snake bite occurs.

⚠️ Venomous snakes found in Georgia include:
• Copperhead
• Cottonmouth (Water Moccasin)
• Timber Rattlesnake
• Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake
• Pigmy Rattlesnake

Most snake bites occur when people try to handle, capture, or kill a snake. The best rule is simple: Leave snakes alone and give them plenty of space.

‼️ If someone is bitten by a snake:

✅ Move away from the snake to prevent additional bites.
✅ Stay as calm and still as possible.
✅ Remove rings, watches, or tight clothing near the bite area before swelling begins.
✅ Keep the bitten area slightly above heart level.
✅ Call 911 or seek emergency medical care immediately.
✅ If it can be done safely, try to remember the snake’s appearance—but do NOT attempt to catch or kill it.

🚫 Do NOT:
• Cut the wound
• Try to suck out the venom
• Apply ice
• Use a tourniquet
• Drink alcohol or caffeine
• Attempt to capture the snake

Remember, not every snake bite injects venom, but all snake bites should be evaluated by medical professionals.

Enjoy the outdoors safely this summer, watch where you place your hands and feet, and teach children to respect wildlife from a safe distance.

🚑 Meet The Crew🚑

Ty Tolbert and Tylor Murphy are assigned to Med 6 on B-shift.

Ty (left) has been in EMS and serving Jackson County for 20 years. Ty says, “Running calls is work, we come to the job to work, embrace the work and treat every patient like you would want your grandma treated.” Every winter, you can find Ty duck hunting in Arkansas.

Tylor (right) has been in EMS and serving Jackson County for 21 years. Tylor also served the county for a year in Emergency Management. Tylor loves being a paramedic because everyday is different and he has the opportunity to make a difference in a persons life on often their worst day. He loves that he has the opportunity to serve his community.

Fun fact-Ty and Tylor helped start a garden at Station 6. They say the garden is a collaborative team effort from all the crews at Station 6. “It feeds us well both in our stomachs and hearts.”

Ty and Tylor are great assets to the team! If you see them out and about or working in the garden, come say 👋!

Did you know that medication errors send thousands of people to the emergency room each year?

This Safety Friday, Jackson County EMS encourages everyone to take a few simple steps to stay safe:

✅ Take medications exactly as prescribed
✅ Keep medicines in their original containers
✅ Never share prescription medications
✅ Check expiration dates regularly
✅ Store medications out of reach of children and pets
✅ Keep an updated list of your medications with you

🚨 In an emergency, having an accurate medication list can help first responders provide faster and safer care.

A few minutes spent organizing your medications today can prevent a serious problem tomorrow.

🚑 What We Do Wednesday

Need Help Getting a Loved One Back Up? Call 911 — We’re Here to Help!

If a family member or loved one has fallen and is unable to get back up, but does not appear to be injured, it is absolutely okay to call 911 and request a lift assist from Jackson County EMS.

Our crews are trained and equipped to safely help individuals get back on their feet and into a comfortable position. You do not have to struggle on your own or risk injuring yourself trying to lift someone.

📞 When calling, please let dispatch know:
✅ The person is not injured (if known)
✅ Their approximate weight
✅ Any mobility concerns or special circumstances

Providing an estimated weight helps us ensure the appropriate resources and personnel are sent to assist safely.

💙 Most importantly, there is NO CHARGE for lift assist calls. We would much rather come help than have someone become injured attempting to lift a loved one themselves.

Jackson County EMS is here for our community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Never hesitate to call when you need us!

From patrol vehicles and ambulances to fire apparatus, public works equipment, transit vehicles, and countless other pieces of equipment, our fleet technicians work tirelessly to inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain the vehicles that serve our community every day.

Their expertise, attention to detail, and commitment to safety help ensure that county employees have reliable equipment when responding to emergencies, maintaining our roads, serving residents, and carrying out the many services that keep Jackson County moving forward.
