On this day, 18 years ago, our country fell under attack. Because of the heroism of all first responders that day, people were saved, but sadly there were also many that lost their lives during the attack. Our prayers for comfort are with the families who carry on without their loved ones. May we never forget this day and how our country came together and united. God Bless the United States of America!

On the night of August 18th, 2019 around 10:30 PM, a Jena Police Officer was on patrol on East Oak Street when he observed a gold Chevy truck cross over the fog line while passing Speedy Mac's. The officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle which came to a stop in the Sonic parking lot.

Upon contact with the driver, the officer observed him to be very nervous and having slurred speech. After asking the driver for his identification, the driver advised the officer that his license were suspended. After a computer check, the officer confirmed the driver to have a suspended license.

While questioning the driver about his suspended license, the officer observed a smell coming from inside the vehicle commonly associated with an alcoholic beverage. The officer asked the driver to step out of the vehicle at that time for further investigation.

The driver was advised of his rights per Miranda and the driver advised that he understood. The driver was asked about how much alcohol he consumed and the driver advised "two or three beer". The driver submitted to SFST (Standard Field Sobriety Test) after asked by the officer if he would. The driver showed several signs of impairment during the test.

The driver was then handcuffed and advised he was being placed under arrest for suspicion of Driving while Intoxicated. The driver was then offered to give a breath sample at LPSO Jail in which the driver refused.

The driver was arrested for the following charges:

LRS 14:98 DWI 1st
LRS 32:415 Driving under Suspension
LRS 32:79 Improper Lane Usage

Chief McLendon would like to thank his patrol officers for continuing to patrol the streets of our town and keeping them safe. As always, if you have any information concerning suspicious activity or need assistance, please contact us. We will be ready to assist you.

With summer here, the kids are out of school and the Jena Town Park is active. Chief McLendon and the Jena Police Department would like to remind everyone that the cross walks are clearly marked and speed limit signs as well as caution signs are posted on Terral Street, Austin Road, Sycamore and Edwards Drive. Kids will be crossing the streets in those areas to reach playground equipment, the splash pad, vendor trucks when present, the Greer-Jones recreation building and ball fields. We ask parents to remind children to be cautious and look both ways before crossing the streets and to also accompany young children as much as possible in this area. During most events, as you know, the traffic becomes very congested and the youth are at a greater risk to be struck by a vehicle if caution is not exercised in the area especially after dark. If you have complaints about speeding or reckless vehicles in the area during events, please call the Jena Police Department. An officer will be dispatched to the area to enforce traffic code as needed.

On behalf of the entire staff at Jena PD we hope you all have a great and safe summer.

Thank you.

Chief McLendon wanted to let everyone know that parking would be limited this evening at the Jena High School graduation ceremony due to a substantial amount of rainfall in the last several days. Handicap parking will also be limited but we will be trying to create som me additional handicap parking if possible. He feels that carpooling may be a better option for people to reduce the amount of vehicles crowding the parking area. We ask that you be patient with officers this evening as they help everyone get parked. Please do not park in anyone’s yard close to the school.

Thank you.

The town of Jena has closed a small section of Jackson Street due to a washout from the large amount rainfall and flash flooding received in the past several hours. We ask that if someone sees anyone removing these barricades, please contact the Jena Police Department.

Update: Jena Elementary School is closed for the day. If you are returning to the school to pick your child up, please go to the side parking by the cafeteria area of the School, parent only pick up, per school officials.

Once again your children are safe, Jena Police Department, LaSalle Parish Sheriffs Office and Jena Fire are on scene and everyone is safe.

so a couple came into your PD this morning and then proceeded to take my grandmother, who has dementia, from my mother, obviously my grandmothers daughter. even though my grandmother couldnt tell the officer what day it was, which might i add is her birthday today, she couldnt tell him what year it is, couldnt name the president, couldnt tell them her birthday, etc.... the officers allowed them to take her. i want to bring something to your closed minds!! did any of your officers once hear this couple even ask once about her medications, drs, or just any info of her medical conditions or health at all?! Nope, they sure didnt!! the only thing the couple mentioned was where is grandmas truck and where is grandmas grandfather clock in her house, which i will add that they broke into and changed the locks on and now the PD in that area which worked with my mom for a yr to get her help, is now having to keep close watch on so they dont go in and steal her blind! this man that now has my grandmother has records in the state of tx for being physically abusive with my grandmother, choking her, hitting her, and punching her. the woman, his ex wife, wants control of my grandmothers little checks she gets and the house and all items within it. THE REST OF THE FAMILY WAS GOING TO SELL EVERYTHING SO THAT SHE COULD GET MEDICAID, HOME CARE ASSISTANCE, MEDICARE, so now we wait!! because the laws suck for these types of patients, we wait til either some thing happens to her or she just goes missing!! LET ME GIVE JENA PD A BIG FREAKING HAND ON A JOB WELL SCREWED UP!! U GUYS DESERVE IT!! all that freaking hard work to get her to the right drs, the right medications, becoming nonviolent, and so much more, u guys just pissed on everything
