Dear Warrington K9 Unit Family and Supporters,

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the sudden passing of K-9 Officer Stephen Plum, Jr. Officer Plum, better know as “K9 Murphy’s human,” is an 8-year veteran of the police department and accomplished so much in his time with us. He was so devoted and committed to our K9 Unit and his partner Murphy. He is also a United States Marine Corps veteran.

Our family is heartbroken beyond words. Please keep his amazing wife, Nancy, his five children, his parents, friends, and family in your thoughts. Please send some good thoughts for K9 Murphy, as he no doubt will be struggling to figure out where his person is.

We love you Steve. Our place will never be the same without you.

Update 5/17: a go fund me page was created for the Plum Family. If you feel so inclined please share.

RIP

The Pottstown Police Department mourns the sudden illness and death of K9 Kato. K9 Kato has been with the Pottstown Police Department since 2012 and was the dedicated and loyal partner of Sergeant Steve Hatfield. K9 Kato, who was from the Czech Republic, faithfully served with Sgt. Hatfield, patrolling and protecting the Borough of Pottstown for over 8 years, and was still active duty at the time of his passing. Kato was trained and certified in narcotics detection and patrol tactics. Kato was a former member of Montgomery County SWAT-West and was also used by the Montgomery County Drug Task Force. After falling ill, K9 Kato was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. Kato passed this weekend with Sgt. Hatfield by his side. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sgt. Hatfield and his family.

Some of you may not know this but we used to have a K9 unit here. This photo is from the night that JPD introduced both new K9s to the community back in August of 2016. These two were the second and third dogs that worked for JPD. Unfortunately, the unit was disbanded and the dogs were retired in December of 2020. They now live at home with their handlers for their early retirement.
