Join us Saturday 10/24/26 from 10am-2pm as we hike the stunning Estero Americano Coast Preserve and watch raptors soar high above the coastal grasslands along their fall migration route.

The hike will be about 5 miles with 600 feet in elevation as we explore the Ridge Trail. From this vantage point, we will be in prime observation territory to witness the acrobatic feats of these marvelous birds of prey.

Adrian Johnson of West County Hawk Watch, will be leading the hike and helping us to identify the raptors that we encounter along the way. Make sure to bring your binoculars to catch all the action!

Restoration work continues at the Estero Americano Coast Preserve to restore deeply eroded gullies. Here we are with WRA Environmental Consultants on the smallest of the five restoration sites on the preserve, utilizing the "gully stuffing" technique to use slash from our tree trimming along with willow walls and check dams to halt the erosion and restore riparian habitat. We'll complete the project by fencing this area off from cattle. This technique will slow, spread and sink the water, recharging the groundwater while the biomass placed in the gully will break down and act as a compost pile locked in place with the willow roots growing into it. In time, this will be great habitat for songbirds, newts and red-legged frogs.

Join us Sunday, 10/11/2026 from 10:00am - 2:00pm as we hike the Coastal Prairie Loop and watch raptors soar high above the coastal grasslands along their fall migration route.

This moderately strenuous hike will be about 4 miles and include over 800 feet in elevation gain from the coastal bluffs to the edge of the forested ridgeline. From this vantage point, we will be in prime observation territory to witness the acrobatic feats of these marvelous birds of prey.

Planned Prescribed Burn

CAL FIRE LNU plans a 4.1-acre prescribed burn at Jenner Headlands Preserve on Thursday, Sept. 24, beginning around 9 a.m.

Smoke may be visible in the area. The burn will only proceed if conditions are safe.

Join us at Jenner Headlands Preserve for our Ancient Redwoods Hike on Saturday 09/05/26.

Despite a century of logging operations, including clear-cutting, there remains reminders of the forest's original granduer. This 7 mile guided hike will take us to areas not normally open to the public to seek out the remaining individual old-growth trees and learn about our efforts to restore the forest and its important ecological functions. Be prepared to carpool from the parking lot about a mile up a dirt road to the trailhead.
