⛈️SAFETY TIPS FOR A THUNDERSTORMS AND MONSOON SEASON ⛈️

Living on the side of a mountain makes Jerome beautiful… but during monsoon season, it also means we all need to stay alert, prepared, and look out for one another.

Whether you’re a longtime local, a weekend visitor, or just passing through our historic hillside town, summer storms in Jerome can develop FAST. Heavy rain, lightning, flash flooding, falling rock, slick roads, power outages, and sudden visibility changes are all part of Arizona monsoon season.

A few quick reminders to help keep everyone safe:

⚡ If thunder roars, head indoors.
Lightning can strike well ahead of a storm.
If you witness a lightening strike and see it spark, notify 911.

🚗 Never drive through flooded roadways.
The phrase “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” applies here too. Even shallow moving water, and water flowing downhill can sweep a vehicle or hide road damage.

⛰️ Watch for rockslides and debris on mountain roads.
Storm runoff can loosen rocks and create dangerous driving conditions with little to no warning.

🐾 Keep pets secured during storms.
Thunder and lightning can easily spook animals unfamiliar with the noise. Especially our visiting furry friends.

🔦 Keep basic emergency supplies handy.
Flashlights, phone chargers, bottled water, medications, and extra batteries are always a good idea during storm season.

🥾 Visitors exploring trails or historic areas:
Check weather conditions before heading out, wear appropriate footwear and clothing, and avoid washes or low-lying areas if storms are nearby.

🤝 Check on neighbors when you can.
Especially elderly residents, those living alone, or anyone who may need extra assistance during severe weather.

Jerome has always been a resilient little mountain town because this community shows up for each other. Let’s all do our part to stay weather aware, stay prepared, and help keep our residents and visitors safe this monsoon season.

Stay safe out there, Jerome. 🌧️⚡💜

🏘️ Wildfire Safety Is a Community Effort
Jerome’s close-knit community helps to make our preparations stronger.

NFPA’s Firewise principles emphasize that collective action reduces risk for everyone.

🤝 Help neighbors with defensible space - Some of our neighbors are not as spry as they used to be
📢 Report fire hazards early - If you see a safety issue, call the Fire Department
🧓 Check on vulnerable residents - Especially in the warmer months
🌲 Work together to reduce fuels in shared areas - create a neighborhood clean-up in your area.

Don't have a way to move the combustibles off the property, call the Jerome Fire Department and we can make arrangements to get your dry fuels down to the burn pile and away from your homes.

Prepared communities are more resilient communities.

🚁 Community Training Notice 🚁

Just a heads up for the community.
Tonight around 6:00 PM, the Fire Department will be conducting training with one of our agency partners. This means you may see or hear a helicopter in the area during the evening hours.

There is no emergency and no cause for alarm. Thursdays are a normal training day for our department, and these trainings help keep our staff and volunteers prepared for the moments when emergency situations arise. Consistent training and education, especially with our mutual aid and interagency partners, help keep us prepared and ready to serve our community in the best way possible.

We appreciate everyone’s support while we continue to train and work together with our partner agencies.

📣COMMUNITY UPDATE - FIRE CHIEF POSITION📣

Yes, things around the firehouse are changing, and we believe they’re changing in a good way. As those changes happen, we want to be as transparent as possible with our community.
Many of you may have seen, heard or even participated in the recent public discussion regarding the Jerome Fire Department Fire Chief position. We welcome community interest and questions, and in the interest of transparency and making sure accurate information is available, we’d like to provide some clarification about the position, the hiring process, and qualifications being discussed.

As many of you know, the Fire Chief position has been vacant since Chief Blair’s retirement in November 2025. The position has been publicly posted since April 2026 through multiple professional recruitment platforms, including the Arizona Fire Chiefs Association.

As part of the recruitment and long-term retention efforts, the Town of Jerome periodically reviews and updates job descriptions and qualifications to ensure they reflect the needs of the organization and, most importantly, the needs of the community we serve. During that process, the Fire Chief job description was reviewed and identified as needing updates. Reference material from eight career and combination fire departments both inside and outside of Arizona was used to help ensure the position reflects the realities of leading a department like Jerome’s. Those updates considered factors unique to our community, including:
• Wildland-urban interface fire risk
• Mountainous terrain and limited access routes
• Small-department staffing models
• Mutual aid and interagency coordination responsibilities
• The need for both administrative leadership and operational competency

There were questions about the inclusion of ENGB (Engine Boss) and ICT5 (Incident Commander Type 5) qualifications in the posting.
To clarify, these are not requirements applicants must already hold before applying. Candidates may meet those qualifications either through current certification or by obtaining them within the established timeframe after appointment.
Those qualifications were included because Jerome operates in a high wildfire-risk environment, where understanding wildland operations and incident command plays an important role in department leadership.
We also want to clarify that wildfire assignments, deployments, and staffing coverage decisions are not made by any one individual. Those decisions are made through established leadership processes, operational policies, staffing considerations, and coordination with our mutual aid partners to ensure emergency service coverage remains in place for the community.

We recognize, and encourage, public discussion about leadership, staffing, and community safety. Those conversations are appropriate and important, and community members absolutely have the right to ask questions and seek information about public agencies and public service positions. At the same time, good conversations depend on accurate information. Speculation, assumptions, or incomplete information presented as fact can create confusion, impact public confidence, and affect the people who dedicate their time and energy to serving this community.

Jerome Fire Department is built on people. We rely on the dedication of our career staff, volunteers, auxiliary members, and strong interagency partnerships every single day. We value the professionalism, service, and commitment each person and partner agency brings to emergency response in Jerome. Those relationships are a major part of what allows us to continue delivering the level of service our community expects and deserves.
If you have questions or concerns, we encourage you to use official public channels, including Town Council meetings, Town administration, and department leadership, where information can be discussed openly and accurately.
Thank you for your continued support of Jerome Fire Department and for supporting the staff, volunteers, auxiliary members, mutual aid partners, and regional agencies who work together every day to serve and protect this community.

🚗 Vehicles & Wildfire Safety
Vehicles can unintentionally start fires - especially in dry areas like Jerome.

NFPA reminds us that everyday activities can create ignition risks under the right conditions.

Remember to:
• Avoid parking on dry grass and letting the car run unattended in dry conditions
• Maintain your vehicle to prevent sparks, inspect tires and brakes to ensure safety
• Carry an emergency kit and keep fuel levels adequate should a quick departure become necessary.
• Check for dragging chains if you're pulling a trailer
• Be aware of burn restrictions and don't throw cigarette butts out the window when fire danger is high

A key point to remember, a hot exhaust system can ignite dry vegetation in seconds.

🐾 Prepare Your Pets, Horses and Livestock for Wildfire Evacuation
When planning to evacuate, don’t forget your animals!

NFPA recommends including pets and livestock in your emergency planning.

✔️ Have carriers, leashes, trailers and food ready
✔️ Keep vaccination and ID records accessible, stock up on necessary medications if needed
✔️ Plan where animals can safely go if they can't go with you, check for local designated animal sheltering areas
✔️ Never leave animals behind, not even in an open pasture

If it’s unsafe for you, it’s unsafe for them.

🏠 Protect Your Home from Embers
Wind-blown embers are the leading cause of homes igniting during wildfires.

NFPA research shows that small, overlooked vulnerabilities can allow embers to enter and start fires.

Simple steps include:
• Cleaning roofs and gutters regularly
• Screening attic and foundation vents
• Sealing gaps around roofs and siding
• Using non-combustible materials near your home
