Update on Van Gogh!

Our feral friend with the awful wounds on either side of his head has been treated and is recovering. He will be transferred into some larger accommodations as he convalesces, but we are all thrilled at the immediate difference.

Very interestingly enough, no ear mites were present, but this poor boy’s ears were absolutely filthy and infected. A cytology was done and EKT (Enrofloxacin, Ketaconazole and Triamcinolome) was administered. Which is a great treatment for more elaborate ear infections.

A huge shoutout to Sheltering Vets at Twin Oaks for doing such a fantastic job at clipping and cleaning his wounds. He already looks so much better and we are hoping that he will only continue to improve 🤍

Teamwork is truly one of the rescue community’s greatest strengths!

Affordable Altering and North Jersey Kitty Committee worked together today, with the invaluable help of Homeless Tails and quick action by Melissa Rae Lambert, to secure an injured feral cat we are now lovingly calling Van Gogh.

As evidenced in the photos, Van Gogh has been suffering for some time. With deep wounds on either side of his head and injuries to his ears, we believe he may have an incredibly severe case of ear mites.

For those that may be unaware, ear mites are a very contagious microscopic parasite that will burrow themselves into the ear canal of the affected animal and cause intense itching and inflammation. They predominantly affect outdoor cats, but for our feral friends who have no other option than living outside, it is up to us to intervene.

Van Gogh will be heading to the vet tomorrow for treatment and wound care. Given the extent of the damage done, any contribution you may be able to make towards his care would be greatly appreciated. And many thanks again to all involved in this rescue effort 💜

I am posting again on behalf of my friend and rescuer who, due to some ongoing personal hardships, is seeking placement for the remaining cats in her care. As many rescues and shelters are already overwhelmed, I know this is a big ask. An amazing rescuer and friend is unfortunately experiencing some very trying personal hardships. Since the founding of their rescue they have chosen to focus on taking the cats that truly had no other options. I know every rescue is overwhelmed, and adoptions are down, but I am hopeful that we can come together as a community to support them during this very difficult time.

The goal is to have the cats listed below transferred to other rescues that may have availability, or even be adopted by approved applicants. They are as follows:

To expand upon on my post from yesterday about ensuring senior cats are receiving appropriate veterinary care, I would like to highlight Cali today.

Unfortunately Cali was not seen by a veterinarian regularly and when the owner’s nephew contacted me yesterday evening, I could tell based on the symptoms described that Cali could wait no longer. Through Affordable Altering I was able to have her seen this morning.

Unfortunately Cali was found to have an enormous inoperable oral mass that was and would prevent her from eating. After discussing the findings with the doctor, it was determined that the most humane option at this point was to euthanize. An unfortunate, but heartbreaking reality of working with animals.

It is so important for caregivers, or reliable professionals, to be able to discern when certain things just cannot wait. And this is to once again emphasize the importance of annual vet visits, especially as our animals age. Affordable Altering knows that financial constraints are often a barrier, so please do not hesitate to reach out if you need assistance.

I apologize for the lack of posts, but as we all know, life sometimes very much gets in the way. But I greatly appreciate anyone circulating or interacting with things I’d previously shared. Now on to the true purpose of this post!

While Affordable Altering’s core mission is to offer low cost spay/neuter services, I am more than happy to assist with other veterinary care that may be needed.

I recently connected with a very nice gentleman whose good friend passed away and left behind quite a few cats, all of whom are seniors. Today sweet Trip, estimated to be 12 to 13 years old, went for a wellness exam, updated rabies vaccine, updated distemper vaccine, an FIV/FeLV test, a full senior blood panel, cystocentesis and urinalysis for just $360.

Though this may still seem like a lot to many, I can confidently say that for all of the aforementioned services the cost is exceptional. So please don’t hesitate to contact me for anything your cat may need to ensure their health. Especially as they enter their senior years 💜

As many people know, we are currently in a massive cat overpopulation crisis. Ensuring your cat is spayed or neutered is not only beneficial for the reasons listed above, but it is truly the only way to prevent the overpopulation from worsening. In recent years, the amount of cats entering the nation’s shelters has increased and as a result euthanasia rates have risen.

New Jersey alone is estimated to have 1.3 to 2 million stray or feral cats, which is in addition to owned cats. Despite many people believing that there are adoptive homes for all of the many cats in shelters, and unborn kittens, NJ is ranked third lowest in the nation for cat ownership. So please whether owned cat, or if you are involved in TNR, don’t hesitate to contact me to schedule an appointment.

This gorgeous girl had an emergency spay today due to a condition called pyometra. This is something that can be completely prevented and is another reason why ensuring your cat is spayed is of the utmost importance.

Pyometra is an often fatal uterine infection if not treated as quickly as possible. It progresses at a rapid rate, with the only solution being a complete ovariohysterectomy (spay). Symptoms to watch for are lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting, excessive grooming of the ge***al area, vaginal discharge or a distended abdomen in cases of closed pyometra.

Spay and neuter are so vital to your cat’s overall wellbeing, and are not just done to prevent reproduction. Though that is reason enough given the cat overpopulation crisis we are currently facing. Please don’t wait until it may be too late and schedule now.
