Liberty State Park celebrates its 50th anniversary this Sunday, June 14. Today, we are taking a look back at how an abandoned rail yard in the shadow of Lady Liberty transformed into a green oasis and New Jersey’s first urban state park.

Thanks to the vision of community advocates including Morris Pesin, Audrey and Warren Zapp, Theodore Conrad and J. Owen Grundy, on Flag Day in 1976 Governor Brendan T. Byrne opened Liberty State Park to visitors as New Jersey’s bicentennial “gift to the nation.”

Celebrate at Liberty State Park this Sunday, with a full day of free community events. Learn more: https://www.instagram.com/p/DYpZ-YFl0ya/

Monarch butterfly feeding from a butterfly w**d plant. 🦋

As spring warms into summer, many species of butterflies are frequenting Liberty State Park, including Danaus plexippus, also known as the monarch butterfly. Monarchs are large butterflies which stand out with their bright black and orange wings. Like all insects, they have six legs and three body parts – the head, thorax, or middle, and abdomen, or tail.

Adult monarch butterflies lay their eggs on the leaves of milkw**d plants. Milkw**d contains a toxic property that monarch caterpillars can retain when they ingest the leaves, but it does not harm the caterpillar to eat milkw**d. As the monarch caterpillar and butterfly have very bright, bold coloring, this is usually a sign in nature that they may potentially be toxic.

During the late summer and early fall, monarch butterflies begin a migration from their summer habitats, south to Mexico, where they spend the winter months. Monarch butterfly populations have dwindled over the past several years due to habitat loss and use of herbicides which destroy milkw**d plants. In 2023, the species was classified as Vulnerable. 🌿

One way to help monarch populations is to plant milkw**d seeds will attract not only monarch butterflies, but other species of pollinators as well. The next time you’re in Liberty State Park, stop by the Nature Center and check to see if they have any seeds available for you to help the monarch butterfly! 🦋

“Leave the gun, take the cannoli!”

One of the most iconic lines in film was spoken right here at Liberty State Park! 🗽

Before the park was established in 1976, scenes from The Godfather were filmed west of Freedom Way in the area that is now known as the park’s “interior” in 1971, making Liberty State Park a part of Hollywood history! 🎬

Next time you visit, take in the views, perhaps with a cannoli in hand!

Bird Boxes in Action! 🪺

Earlier this year, we posted about the tree swallow boxes at Caven Point receiving their yearly cleanup in preparation for the spring season. It seems our boxes have the approval of the local tree swallow population, as they are raising young! Check out these shots of tree swallow hatchlings eager for a meal! 🐣

Tree swallows are members of the family Hirundindae, small passerines (songbirds) found all over the world. They are known for their foraging behavior to catch insects “on the wing,” or mid-flight.

These tiny songbirds are excellent flyers with slender bodies and pointed wings, resembling the shape of an airplane. They average about six inches long, making them capable of acrobatic flight. Ideal habitats are open fields, grasslands, and nearby bodies of water where insects can easily be found. Swallows have short strong beaks which grasp insects out of the air or water. If you’re not a fan of insects such as mosquitoes or gnats on a humid summer day, a hungry swallow can be a welcoming sight!

After spending the winter in Mexico and Central America, swallows migrate north to begin breeding. They construct simple cup nests out of mud and branches, often by cliffs or on the sides of objects. Pairs are monogamous, and a female will lay tiny white eggs, about four per clutch.
