This Pride Month, we’re spotlighting a landmark in our own backyard. In 2023, the Jersey City Council voted unanimously to designate 343½ Eighth Street, in the Hamilton Park Historic District, as a local landmark — the childhood home of Venus Pellagatti Xtravaganza, the ballroom icon featured in the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning.
Born in Jersey City in 1965, Venus found her voice in New York’s underground ballroom scene before her life was cut short at 23. Her home is believed to be the first landmark in New Jersey designated for its LGBTQ+ significance.
Preservation isn’t only about grand mansions and the powerful. It’s about protecting the places that hold a community’s memory — and making sure every Jersey City story is part of the record. As her family and advocates put it: we have always been here.
The JCLC will make a donation this month to the Venus Pellagatti Xtravaganza House vision through Garden State Equality, supported by funds raised from our 2025 and 2026 Pride programming.
